A HEAVY downpour lasting more than two hours in the late morning on Wednesday caused flash floods in several city areas. Worst-hit was Little India, around Jalan Besar, Rowell Road and Hindoo Road, where traffic snarled and businesses were affected.
The water there was as high as 300mm, said national water agency PUB. At 300mm, water is about ankle-deep.
The heart of the Central Business District (CBD) between North Bridge Road and Shenton Way was also flooded, although the waters there subsided within 20 minutes. Around 123mm of rain fell over Shenton Way and 103mm in Little India on Wednesday. During the Orchard Road floods of July 17, around 194mm of rain was dumped over the area in two hours.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) had issued an alert earlier in the morning, but the flash floods still caught many motorists and businesses off guard.
For Indian national tourist B. Singh, 34, who was tucking into a hot bowl of noodles in a food centre along Rowell Road, the floods reminded him of home: 'I've been here more than 20 days and this is the heaviest I've seen it rain.
'I'm very surprised. The road looks the same as any back home when a flood happens there.'

Not only do have a flood problem, we also have a flood of problems from issues like immigration, foreigners taking our jobs and bringing up the cost of living, etc. So if the water issue is an act of god, how about fixing those floods that are not act of god, can our dear gahmen fix it or they are not competent enough, maybe they need to use their salary to fix the problem.

God is happy or sad? Maybe trying to punish Singapore for opening 2 casinos?
Flooding can be due to planning and development flaws? Will experts say that because we have too much underground structures built in reason years that deprived free flow of subterreanean water movements? That means congestion and therefore this pushes up the water level upwards when it rains? I think quite possible since we have so much new underground MRT tunnels and stations, roads, KPE and other construction works below ground.

Residents jittery over what the next storm will bring

Some frustrated households at Gentle Reflections have moved to hotels and serviced apartments for $700 to $1,000 a night.
Some tenants, like Mr Adre Volschenk, have had enough. The South African plans to move out of the townhouses at Gentle Road, off Dunearn Road, once his lawyer settles the lease agreement. He has lost two cars and $15,000 worth of personal items when the flood waters came on Saturday. “I’m not comfortable living here. My family is traumatised. My maid almost drowned in this whole thing,” he said. Domestic helper Lalaine Suratos, 30, awoke that morning to find the basement filled with ankle-high water, which rose to her chest and kept rising. “I had to jump onto a chair to stay above the water,” she said. If not for Mr Volschenk, who pulled her to safety, the maid would have drowned in the rising waters. The 30-year-old Filipina was warded at Tan Tock Seng Hospital after she complained of stomach cramps. She has since recovered.
The flood was the second in a month at the development. In the first, the waters rose to around knee height and Mr Faiek Peck is fed up with the landlord. He said: “If the owner isn’t prepared to do anything, we can’t risk going through this again.” He
But not all residents want out. Swiss national Frank Hemm would like to remain if the drainage issues are resolved, as his daughter attends a school in the vicinity. When contacted yesterday about the tenants’ concerns, a spokesman for the property’s management said it had “given enough help” to the residents.As it began to rain yesterday, the residents’ jitters were evident. Mr Volschenk put aside his cleaning at home and tended to the development’s underground drain, which was starting to fill up with rainwater. After 10 minutes of trying, the water pump finally kicked into life. Mr Volschenk said: “I’m just frustrated because between PUB and the management of Gentle Reflections, nobody seems to be committed to solving the obvious problem that we have over here”.

Likely, u will observe that the fallen giant trees hv shorter roots. This is because these trees, esp those planted along the roadside,they were migrated from, ie nurseries or jungles and planted there. Normally, the roots were trimmed, if too long for transportation n limited space for planting at road side.
Likely they were not planted from shoot. Hence, the main roots were not properly nutured, as compared to those at tropical tree area, ie Changi Hill, Upper Thomson jungle, Sembawang Park, Bukit Timah Hill etc.
Hence, those migrated trees are prone to topple, once the loosen soil are unable to hole the weight. It is more prone, if the giant tree trunks on top are weight lop-sided, it causes a First Class Level Force action and tilt the tree easily over one side and uproot it with ease.
It is uncommon to see the same size of tree uproot in the jungles.
AK is fr kampong, above r my guess only lah, jagan tention, carrying on happy driving lah. Avoid thunderstorm could reduce risk mah.
PS. The moral of the story, take MRT loh, no tree issue, moreover on the road, even taking double decker bus, also kena lorry metal level incidence, causing fatal death liao. Cheers.
