RSAF pilots made emergency landing because of mechanical problem: DPM Teo

SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean has said that preliminary findings showed that a mechanical problem caused RSAF helicopter pilots to make an emergency landing at Woodlands on Thursday.

The Apache AH—64 helicopter landed in an open field between Woodlands Avenue 12 and Woodlands Drive 64. The two pilots were unhurt, and there was no damage to public property.

"Our preliminary findings also show that designated flight routes and emergency procedures were followed and these allowed the pilots to land the aircraft in an open field," said Mr Teo.

"We are conducting investigations together with the manufacturers of the aircraft," he added.

"Our next steps are to make sure that we do a thorough investigation to find the root cause. We will thoroughly inspect our Apaches and Seahawks before any decision is made to resume flying of these aircraft."

Mr Teo was speaking on the sidelines of his official visit to India on Friday, said a MINDEF statement.

London bus driver in hit-and-run accident out on bail
SINGAPORE - London police have released on bail a man who was allegedly involved in a road accident last week that killed Singaporean medical student Tan Mingwei (picture).

The 50-year-old double-decker bus driver was arrested on suspicion of careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He is believed to have told detectives he had no idea the girl was under his bus, according to British media reports.

A double-decker night bus has been recovered and is being examined by police. The driver will return to a police station later this year pending further enquiries, a New Scotland Yard press statement said.

An inquest is scheduled to be held today.

Ms Tan was believed to have been knocked down near Hampstead's Royal Free Hospital - where her shoes were found - and dragged 1.6km. Her body was found near Belsize Park Tube station in North London at about 2am on Thursday. She was pronounced dead on the spot.

Her handbag, which contained a wallet, mobile phone and student ID was found on the road 150m away.

A post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as multiple injuries.

Ms Tan reportedly died on her 20th birthday. She was due to start her third year at Peterhouse College, Cambridge University.

Ms Tan is the younger daughter of Mr Tan Tarn How, a playwright and research fellow at Singapore's Institute of Policy Studies, and his wife, a dentist.

The Tan family is in London and have asked to be left to grieve in private.

Ms Tan, a former student of Raffles Girls' School and Raffles Junior College, received an A*Star National Science Scholarship in 2008 to read medicine.

She was the president of Cambridge University's karate club.

Dr Philip Pattenden, a senior tutor at Peterhouse College, said: "The death of Mingwei Tan, an undergraduate at Peterhouse who was due to start her third year at the college, is reported with much regret.

"She was doing very well in medical sciences and was a popular member of our community, always full of joy.

"She will be truly missed... The college is greatly saddened by its loss and extends its sympathy to the family," he was quoted as saying.

Flowers and messages of tribute have been left at the site where Ms Tan's body was found.

Those who knew her also posted messages of condolence online and on Facebook.

"We will miss you. Your lovely sweet smile and your ever-passionate attitude towards things in life will always remain in our hearts. May God bless and watch over your family as they go through this period," said one message from one of her former teachers. Dylan Loh

The Hindu, 2 October 2010

balajiwake04

Singapore on Thursday bid farewell to Balaji Sadasivan, an ethnic-Indian leader whose death on Monday was deeply mourned as a national loss.

Balaji was a distinguished neurosurgeon who chose the nerve centre of politics just nine years before his death at the age of 55.

In making that decisive shift, upon persuasion by his friends, he went by the dictum of “anything worth doing is worth doing well”.

Unsurprisingly, therefore, he quickly gave up the idea of being a part-time neurosurgeon while becoming a passionate politician. The dual roles, as suggested by some of his friends, won’t do. For him, politics was not as strange as the outer space.

Mrs Lee was great in many ways, says President in condolence letter

Mrs Lee Kuan Yew (Mdm Kwa Geok Choo)

SINGAPORE : President SR Nathan has said he and his wife were deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Mrs Lee Kuan Yew, wife and life—long companion of Minister Mentor.

Mrs Lee died on Saturday at 5.40pm.

In his

condolence letter

to Minister Mentor Lee, the President said the grief of Mr Lee over her passing away must be heavy and immeasurable.

The President said Mrs Lee was great in many ways “ as a legal luminary, as a mother of an illustrious family, and more than that for her stoic presence next to Mr Lee Kuan Yew during times of turbulence and tension in the many years of his political struggle.

"Many would not know of her quiet but important contributions to the State, as she walked that long road with him. She followed him faithfully “ always by his side “ throughout all changes that befell him in his political career," said President Nathan.

"By his side she helped him pursue his chosen path in politics, preoccupied always with the good of Singapore before anything else, which she shared."

In his letter, the President described Mrs Lee as MM Lee’s "companion, confidante and counsel" and said most may never fully appreciate the impact and influence she had in shaping Minister Mentors thinking and life.

Mr Nathan said there can be no substitute for the place Mrs Lee had in her family’s life, nor consolation for her family.

The sorrow and pain must be great for them as well. As it is for us Singaporeans who had been touched by her in one way or another.
