I totally agree that we can find many instances of love (true love) still exist, though it's relatively rare...
And that's the real beauty of it... real rare treasures of the spirit in a modern world.. .
Both statements practically quite true for some. But we still see true loves in our daily life, its passion.
A nurse married to one of my former subordinates who got paralysed and sitting on wheel chair. His family not rich, sister is blind(but she is able to take bus to work) and mum a cleaner!!!.
It all depends on the strength of love and feelings. In the first place, physical appearance and money (material stuff) are really just the physical stuff. It varies from person to person. For some, "rough tea" and "plain rice" is sufficient, for some, material stuff is everything.
Really varies among different individuals.
Love can be just a fleeting emotion evoked by the presence of benefits (ie. love of oneself)...
For illustration...
If a 'loved' woman is instantly disfigured, say bodily as well as facially, will the same love still exist?
Similarly, if a moneyed man is financially devastated, abruptly or gradually, will the same love still exist?
( The latter is still valid today as in the olden past - perhaps only the scale of the benefit has increased
in these times of earning power).
Hence, such love, which is rife, is made of the thinnest of ice...

Love gives you peace of mind, content, comfort and happiness.
Money fills your stomach, happiness(Subjective la), comfort, self-esteem (also subjective la).
A bit of each will be good! Ha ha!
there u have it !
'08 rice production to climb in Asia, Africa, L.America
but we still need the will , the 'heart-ware' and 'few good men' to lead/direct !

wonder why Dr. Mahathir didn't sound his 'battle cry' : charge the speculators (pls no offence to anyone in particuler, just for fun , ok ) under " crime against humanity " !
hahaha !
OK, since popular demands. Lets translate the wise sayings, since 2k yrs ago, dun know by who, but kept inside my heart for decades, though didn't highlight to my tigeress at home. It says:
Money is precious, love is more precious, but if you wish to opts for freedom, both money and love can be discarded. Ah yoh, such a sentimental proverbs, ladies pse forgive ak lah, ak in such delima, nowadays, esp after pension loh.

Ipunter...my pal,
I don't think we can run away from bread and butter issues, like you cannot runaway from us in SJ...:)

Love is true love only when there's no bread (or no more bread) in the equation...
Otherwise, how can it be called love (ie. unconditional love of the spirit)?
