on shorting: nah...singaporegal has her own method, which works for her. so really, why rock the boat? besides, it's not necessary to make money ALL the time. personally, i don't do shorting either. i find it easier to concentrate on one direction. particularly in a mixed market like this: not all stocks are going down. some have in fact bottomed out and rose/rising.

on AK's quote about love: haha, money buys one freedom. that's the sad truth. altho, between freedom, love and money, which would one choose?

human love is always ephemeral; subject to the vagaries of time and circumstance. that's why you have the phrase, cedit amor rebus: Love yields to circumstance.

UBS staff spooked in Singapore, but staying put

14 April 2008

Simon Mortlock

Staff at UBS in Singapore are sprucing up their CVs as job-cut rumours start to spread. One recruiter, who asked not to be named, says a few UBS bankers have already been in touch to discuss their careers.

“I’ve definitely seen more résumés coming across my desk this month. There are certainly interesting things going on at UBS. People there seem to be spooked,” he adds.

The job-loss jitters follow UBS’s announcement earlier this month of US$19bn of new asset writedowns, and the departure of chairman Marcel Ospel.

But at this stage employees are only talking to recruiters, not walking out to join rival banks. “I haven’t seen any actual hirings of UBS people yet. It’s all rumour and speculation at the moment. They want to keep their options open,” says the recruiter.

Another Singapore-based search consultant, who also preferred to remain anonymous, agrees UBS workers are nervous: “From people I know there, there’s a lot of talk about what’s going on, but that’s to be expected when you’ve just lost your CEO and you’ve just lost a lot of money. They naturally feel uncomfortable.”

Although UBS is one of the top-ranked banks in Asia, other firms do not seem to be targeting its talent. Both headhunters say competitors have not approached them about pre-emptive poaching of UBS staff.

Thanks,  iPunter.

very interesting videos ... good to see Jimmy Carter there too !

so, " Gentlemen .. it seems that we have the hardware and the software .what we need is the heart-ware ! "

-----------------------

when the quartz watches came about .. i was telling my cousin : what if the oscillations could be amplified, then we could move the pistons (just like the hands of the watches and clocks ) and the car engines could run on quartz technology ( of course, at that time, we had no idea about thermodynamics or physics)  ... and my cousin answered : if u could think of this surely wouldn't they have thought of that too ... maybe in the next few years cars might run on quartz ... sigh .... our speculations of  have yet to come true ... hahaha !

( of course, at that time, we had no idea about thermodynamics or law of energy or physics , just simple 'boyish mechanics' ... hahaha ! )

oh oh ... didn't think this will be so long ... but anyway ...its going to be a long holiday this weekend ... how u don't mind this blabberings ...hahaha !

----------------------------------------------

I think it is natural for us , share market players , to be focused and 'obsessed' with the price of Oil ... after all, our aim is money ..this is our 'Dharma' ( ? ) ... And the politicians, are as usual , doing their jobs ..with the media playing the to the gallery ...

-------------------------------------------------

But ..I wonder ... what the others are doing ? ... for example .. what are the car manufacturers doing ? ... apart from coming up with 'kindergarten/cartoonish' designs for their latest models ..what else are they doing ..? the oil problem is not something new ..the world is aware of the potency of oil since 1970s ...since then, have they not worked on tackling the oil problem or replacing it completely ? ... how about effieiecnt engines , alternative fuels , or something out of the box .. magnets , electricity , water , .. etc ... why is there no news about the alternatives, new inventions , prototypes .... ? the only thing i see new on the roads are CNG taxis ....

up till now .. west's fear that the most important ingredient to their life-style and economic growth is oil ..and most of it is in the land of 'enemies' ... so wouldn't this fact alone spur them on to come up with alternative solution to oil .. ? surely , while working on the ' most effienet and highly destructive weapons' they would have come up with some lead to alternative fuel ....( am thinking along the lines of our water problem and the solutions we have implememnted.......)

------------------------------------------------

where are the scientists / inventors ? ... isn't it said that necessity is the mother of invention .. are there any cheap alternatives to oil .. or an entirely new concept to propel the engines, move the gears and pistons ? ..

or do they have the solution .. but just waiting for the right time to announce it ..or the right person to give the go ahead .... ?

-----------------------------------------------

.. surely science and technology would have grown by leaps and bounds by now ... ( or have they reached their limits ?) .... 30 years is a long time ... to arrive at an alternative enegy ... surely when the oil price spiked from $30 .... a lot of such gadgets / concepts should have come out of the closet ... ?

what is the amount of oil the motor vehicles comsume versus the oil used in industries ... if they could find a solution for the motor vehicle fuel , then i think half the need will drop .....

--------------------------------------------------

how about announcing a contest to find alternative to oil in this globalised world ? ... a race to find the next energy alternative ... and the media drowning all other news by playing up on the new entreprenuers, inventors , scientists reports on energy discoverie and alternatives ...

the last 2 decades saw tremendous unfolding in the computing/internet/IT field ... wonder who the Bill Gates of Energy will be .. or Gosling of Java ... ?

:  )

Since love is ephemeral by nature and yields to circumstances, then it would be pointless to talk of love 'while you have it'. Since in the end, circumstances are more likely than not to 'deal it's blow'.

Thus, are love vows  unecessary and obsolete? Smiley

Hahaha... you are right... Smiley

But if I buy or hold in a bear market (for months), one also needs a strong heart and one's  blood pressure increases no less (depending on the stakes, of course)...

Main criteria for shorting/naked one, strong heart, high blood pressure keep out. Doc AK, without cert, says one. Cheers.

Singaporegal... :)

Money can be made playing both directions ie in bear and bull markets.

If you have played short since a few months ago, you would have made good profits during the bear market... Smiley

(If BB's can play short, then why not us too?)

Well, I don't think we can convince her to stay put......so we can expect more volatility whenever she goes away.

Guess I better go with the flow and start learning to play short. Smiley

Aiyah, stay at home lah....and avert another SGH tsunami. The market in 2008 as been pretty brutal to investors.....so we don't need more volatility.  Smiley
