One soldier died instantly from a gunshot wound to the head during the clashes, while two more soldiers and 16 civilians were wounded, some of them seriously, medical officials said.
The Reds who want immediate elections to replace Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's government -- accused troops of using "war weapons" against them, and said the soldier was a victim of friendly fire.
"He was shot by people on the same side as him," protest leader Jatuporn Prompan told AFP.
The clashes erupted near Bangkok's number two airport Don Mueang International, which is about 25 kilometres (16 miles) from the main rally site and handles mostly charter and domestic flights.

Troops and riot police tried to stop a convoy of up to 2,000 "red shirt" protesters on pickup trucks and motorcycles who had left central Bangkok in defiance of a state of emergency.
About 100 protesters had moved ahead of the main convoy, charging the troops and riot police, who used batons and shields to push them back. Some red shirts fought back by hurling stones and shooting metal balls from sling-shots, witnesses said.
Three rounds of clashed only stopped when a powerful tropical rainstorm moved over the traffic-choked area about 40 km from central Bangkok on Vipawadee-Rangsit road.
A Reuters photographer said a soldier was shot through his helmet and believed dead.
The photographer, who witnessed the shooting, said the soldier and at least five others were on motorbikes heading towards a cordon of police and troops behind shields when gunfire erupted. It was not immediately clear who shot him. Meanwhile,
Hopes for a negotiated end to the crisis were dashed at the weekend when Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva rejected a proposal by the protesters for an election in three months.
Some within the powerful military, which led a failed operation against a red-shirt rally on April 10, appeared reluctant to be dragged into battle with civilians, urging the government to first look for a political solution.

"Now there is a state within a state," Suriyasai Katasila, one of the movement's leaders, told Reuters Monday. "It's anarchy and the government needs to do something to end that."
The yellows shirts vowed to take action if the red shirts are not dispersed. They are well versed in street protests themselves, besieging the prime minister's office for three months and taking over Bangkok's airports for eight days in 2008.

BANGKOK: Thailand's revered king spoke on national television Monday for the first time since anti-government protests broke out in mid-March, addressing a group of newly appointed judges.
"Do your job with honesty. In this country there may be some people who forget their duty. You should be an example by working honestly and properly, your job is very important," King Bhumibol Adulyadej said.
The 82-year-old monarch spoke to the judges at the Bangkok hospital where he has been staying since last September. He did not refer to the nation's political crisis.
"Working honestly will boost the country's progress and serve as an example for citizens, for civil servants and other people. It will help the country to live in peace and contentment," he said.
"You should help maintain justice. If you can strictly follow your oaths, it will help the country remain orderly," he added.
"Being honest is not easy, there will be many temptations."

"The main point now is not whether or not to disperse but how to solve the whole problem," added the premier, who has been holed up in a military barracks.
Meanwhile. The highly influential army chief said Friday, however, that the use of force was no solution to the crisis, which has twice descended into deadly street violence this month, leaving 26 dead and hundreds injured.
When troops tried to sweep Reds out of Bangkok's historic area on April 10 they suffered a humiliating retreat and there is growing talk of "watermelon" soldiers -- green outside but red inside -- who support the protesters.
Anupong played down talk of a split within the army, which has been sending out mixed signals on how it prefers to handle the demonstrators, who are defying a state of emergency and a ban on rallies in the capital.

On TV, Thai PM offers no new ideas to end crisis

BANGKOK - Thailand's embattled prime minister appeared on television Sunday but offered no initiatives to end the country's weeks long, sometimes bloody, political crisis. Instead he, The Thai PM vows to retake Bangkok protest site.
In response the Reds, said they would prepare for a military offensive to clear their camp, which has forced hotels and malls to close.
"If Abhisit fails to crack down on us he will have to leave office, and if he succeeds in pushing us out using force, Reds rallies will break out in every region of the country," vowed leader Nattawut Saikuar.
There have been mounting incidents of open defiance against security forces in recent days. On Sunday some 1,000 Reds used a truck to block a main road into Bangkok and halt 500 police being drafted in aboard trucks.
In northeast Udon Thani province, another 150 police were prevented from travelling to the capital by a group of 1,000 protesters who blocked their way late Saturday.
Fears of a crackdown escalated earlier in the week amid warnings from the military that protesters would face live weapons fire in any new clashes. After grenade blasts Thursday left one dead and scores injured at a pro-government rally, there are concerns over the risk of more conflict breaking out between Thailand's warring factions.
The elite-backed "Yellow Shirts," who vowed a week ago to take action if the government fails to deal with the rival Reds, plan to meet Monday to discuss their next step after their deadline expired.

BANGKOK - Thailand's "Red Shirts" (Sat) said they were braced for a crackdown to end their protest movement, after the prime minister rejected an offer to compromise on demands for snap polls. "Abhisit has ordered a crackdown on protesters within 48 hours
That is the information I have learned," said Reds leader Nattawut Saikuar. Nattawut did not say where the information came from but other Reds leaders said earlier Saturday they had learned from sympathisers in the army that troops were being mobilised despite ongoing negotiations.
Nattawut said the Reds would strip off the symbols of their allegiance -- the red T-shirts and other garb they have sported for weeks -- to help them fight back against the government.
He said they would stick to a policy of non-violence, but other Reds figures speaking on a stage at their massive encampment in the heart of Bangkok's retail district promised a "guerrilla war" against the government.
One leader also threatened to storm a giant shopping mall that lies within their rally base, which has paralysed the shopping hub for three weeks, saying that soldiers and police are hiding inside.
"We are ready to handle the government measures. No matter what shirt we wear, our hearts are red," said Jatuporn Prompan. - AFP/vm

BANGKOK : Thailand's army and anti-government protesters made tentative peace overtures on Friday, seeking to avoid a looming crackdown and a repeat of clashes that left 25 people dead earlier this month.
The army chief said that the use of force was no solution to Thailand's crisis, which pits the red-shirted demonstrators against a government they condemn as illegitimate and undemocratic.
"The use of force will not end the current problems and would have many repercussions," army chief General Anupong Paojinda told a meeting of top brass, according to deputy spokesman Colonel Sirichan Ngathong.
"The best thing is to create understanding among the people. The army's job now is to take care of the people, and not allow Thais to attack each other."
Reds leader Veera Musikapong said on Friday they were open to elections in three months as a way out of the crippling deadlock - a step back from their original demand for immediate polls. meanwhile
about 5,000 demonstrators of all ages massed in the Royal Plaza square to show their backing for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, according to a police estimate. "We love this country. We love the king. We want peace back," said one of the rally organisers, Tul Sittisomwong, a hospital doctor.

Thailand's political crisis has spread to the rural northeast, a standoff with the military after Wednesday halting a train carrying armed soldiers and heavy equipment in the northern capital of Khon Kaen province. They will hold the train for five days until after the expected crackdown.
"We want to stop the military from killing more people so we have stopped them first," Yongyuth Kongpatimakorn, a Red Shirts leader from Khon Kaen said at a Bangkok news conference.
Army spokesman Colonel Sunsern Kaewkumnerd said Reds leaders in Khon Kaen would be summoned by the authorities over the train incident and charged with obstruction and and illegal detention.
"If negotiations fail then we have prepared 600 troops and police to crack down on them," he told reporters.
The red-shirted protesters, part of a movement that has staged rolling demonstrations in the capital Bangkok since mid-March, said they feared the troops and equipment were part of a looming crackdown on their Bangkok rallying base.
Street clashes in Bangkok earlier this month left 25 people dead.

Thus the state is in a very troublesome precursor to more problem w/o solving the root of the problems.

Thai army warns protesters 'time running out'
BANGKOK - Thailand's army warned Red Shirt anti-government protesters Thursday that "time is running out" to leave their rally site in Bangkok's commercial heart before a crackdown.
But the mostly poor and rural Reds, who have paralysed the capital's commercial heart, remained defiant and ruled out talks with the authorities until the military withdraws.
Tensions remained high after overnight scuffles broke out between the red-shirted protesters and hundreds of pro-government demonstrators, with bottles, stones and firecrackers hurled by the rival camps.

Brain Games dOn’t make you smarter
LONDON
In a six-week study, experts found people who played online games designed to improve their cognitive skills did not get any smarter.
Researchers recruited more than 8,600 people aged 18 to 60 and asked them to play online brain games for at least 10 minutes a day, three times a week.
They were compared to more than 2,700 people who did not play any brain games, but who spent a similar amount of time surfing the Internet. All participants were given a sort of IQ test before and after the experiment.
Researchers said the people who did brain training did not do any better on the test after six weeks than people who had simply been on the Internet. The study was done by the journal

As Members of Parliament, we’re elected to voice the interests of those who vote for us. But what if an MP does not act in accordance with the wishes of those he represents? ( Else, WHAT is REPRESENTATION ? ? ? ? )
Has he kept faith with them or has he betrayed their trust? A recent encounter left me thinking about this issue.
The Housing and Development Board announced, through a sign on a hoarding, plans for the construction of a 14-storey block of rental flats in my ward.
The announcement surprised many.
Quite naturally, residents living next to the proposed block were upset. It would seem the value of their property would be adversely affected. ( Is this a PLAY OUT ? ? ? ? )
The HDB tried but failed to persuade them this would not be the case.
However, what also upset the residents was the fact that I, as their MP, did not consult them ( MISTRUST ? ? ? ? ) ahead of the decision to build the rental block.
In the dialogue on the matter, there were howls of protest and disappointment when I revealed that I’d been aware of the plans but could not tell them in advance because of the price sensitive nature ( Note: Breach of TRUST to the PEOPLE ? ? ? ? Is this also the FINANCIAL DAMAGE to the PEOPLE using their MANDATE ? ? ? ? ) of the information. I left the meeting reflecting on my reply and my role as their MP.
Quite clearly, for a decision as fundamental as building rental units in front of constituents’ blocks, it is not unreasonable to have a certain expectation of consultation.
Yet, such consultation is unlikely to result in a solution acceptable to all stakeholders; and if put to a vote, I am almost certain that the proposition would have been shot down faster than one could say, “Will you support the proposal?”
There is no doubt that blocks of rental flats are necessary in my ward. Confronted with the proposal, I knew I had to support it, despite it being an unpopular decision.
It would have been tempting for me to say “No”, but in my heart I knew that wouldn’t be right. It was a clear case of doing what is right as opposed to doing what is popular.
Doing what is right but not popular seems to be at odds with being an elected representative. That perhaps explains why democracy has tended towards doing what is popular with the people when what is right affects them adversely. ( Note: Is it the same as increasing MP's salary SKY HIGH ???? WHY not reduce MP's pay to EARTH LOW ???? )
In Singapore’s case, the pockets of unhappiness over unpopular but right policies have been small and unlikely ( Note: Taking it for GRANTED ? ? ? ? ) to cause an upheaval at the ballot box. But what if an overwhelming majority has such sentiments?
So far, we’ve been fortunate in being able to do what is both right and popular. That perhaps explains why the People’s Action Party (PAP) has been able to stay in power since 1959. However, the same cannot be said for the future.
As Singapore progresses, a growing divergence ( Note: Is this about the CONFLICT of INTERESTS ? ? ? ? ) of views, particularly between what is right and what is popular, is fairly certain.
Singaporeans will be more vocal and assertive of their wishes and will no doubt make their unhappiness clear when voting.
Consequently, the PAP will face growing pressure to take populist measures. It will be increasingly difficult for the party to have long-term but unpopular policies, such as on issues of resettlement and land acquisition.
It would be a sad day indeed for the PAP if it went down the populist path solely, as this party has always prided itself on doing what is right.
On the issue of the rental flats and my responsibility as an MP, I can reconcile the position by asserting that my duty as an elected representative goes beyond narrow local interests to doing what is in the wider interest of the community.
But what if there is a call by the country to go down the path of bad but popular policies? I would say that we should stick by our principles ( NoTE: WHAT are they ? ? ? ? ) and be prepared to do battle, even if it means becoming the opposition party in Parliament.
After all this is our country. If we are not prepared to do what is right for our own people, who will?
eing a people’s representative in any democracy ( WHAT is the definition of DEMOCRAY ? ? ? ? STepping STone JUST to get a very WELL PAID JOB ? ? ? ? ) can at times be a contradiction in terms. The writer is an MP for Tampines GRC. Pro-Thaksin party requests audience with Thai King over crisis
Posted: 19 April 2010 1904 hrs BANGKOK -
The chairman of Thailand's leading opposition party said Monday he had requested an audience with the revered king to help resolve the country's political crisis.
"There was an effort to contact the office of private secretary to seek an audience," said Chavalit Yongchaiyudh of the Puea Thai party.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 82, who has no official political role but is seen as a unifying figure, has made no public comment on clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces that left 25 dead on April 10.
