SINGAPORE—Singapore Airlines Ltd. said its profit fell 38 percent in the January-March quarter as soaring fuel prices pushed up expenditure.
The carrier said in a statement Thursday that its net profit in the first quarter was SG$171 million (US$139 million) compared with SG$278 million a year earlier.
Quarterly revenue at the world's second-biggest airline by market capitalization rose to SG$3.59 billion from SG$3.34 billion a year earlier.
Expenditure increased to SG$3.42 billion from SG$3.10 billion as jet fuel prices jumped 34 percent from a year earlier.
The airline said high fuel prices and weakness in passenger numbers would continue to hurt operating performance in the near term.

BEIJING (AP) -- China has ordered most of its banks to increase the amount of money they hold in reserves in a new move to curb lending and surging inflation.
The central bank's order Thursday was the fifth reserve increase this year and came after consumer prices rose by a higher-than-expected 5.3 percent in April.
Banks covered by the order were told to increase reserves by 0.5 percent of deposits as of next Wednesday.
The measure is intended to curb credit by restraining the rapid growth in the pool of money available for lending.

The company posted net income of $305.4 million in the three months ended March 31, from a loss of $396.3 million a year earlier, Singapore-based Genting said in a statement today. Sales almost tripled to $922.6 million.
Genting, which owns one of Singapore’s only two casinos, is luring more gamblers and tourists with its US$4.7 billion ($5.8 billion) venue and attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore on the southern Sentosa island. The company plans to open a marine museum, water park and two hotels to drive further growth.
“Singapore is well-placed to capture the rise of casino gaming in Asia, thanks to its position as gateway to southeast Asia,” Sachin Nikhare, an analyst at IIFL Capital in Singapore, said in a May 9 report. “Given its duopoly for the first 10 years, lower gaming tax, lower corporate tax and a supportive government, Genting Singapore has an edge over other Asian gaming venues,” wrote Nikhare, who rates the stock “buy.”
Genting said there may be delays in the completion of the second phase of its development because of “unforeseen difficulties” and it’s seeking ways to address the problem.
The company also said its so-called VIP market of high rollers make up 62% of gaming revenue, and hotel bookings in the second quarter continue to be “encouraging.
Genting shares closed yesterday at $2.17 and have declined 0.9% this year.
Las Vegas Sands Corp., which owns Singapore’s other casino, this month reported first-quarter earnings that missed some analyst estimates.

SINGAPORE
Analysts say they expect stocks of gaming companies such as Genting Singapore to stage a strong rebound in coming weeks.
This is due to easing concerns over Genting’s profit outlook and expectations of higher tourist arrivals that will provide a boost to earnings.
Analysts are bullish about the long-term prospects of the two integrated resorts here as tourist arrivals are expected to continue to rise over the next two to three years.
“The medium- to long-term story for tourism remains very strong,” says Mr Wong Sui Jau, Fundsupermart general manager, citing the 20 per cent growth in tourist arrivals last year.
However, some market watchers say the local gaming industry could face a policy risk. In a report on Monday, Nomura Equity Research said “investors may be concerned about sectors such as residential and gaming, which may be affected as a result of policy review”.
Genting shares traded at a low of S$2.08 to as high as $2.24 last week. They have since rebounded to close at $2.20 yesterday.
In a May 9 report, Credit Suisse research analyst Foong Wai Loke said the market consensus for Genting’s Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortisation (EBITDA) remains very wide, ranging from S$1.4 billion to S$2.3 billion.
“This we believe contributes to its lacklustre share price performance,” his report said.
Still, Credit Suisse believes Genting can also benefit from the region’s active stock market which could be positive for VIP casino revenues, as well as strong commodity prices in Malaysia.
Ahead of Genting’s results announcement today, analysts said investors would rather sit on the sidelines.
“Genting’s results may surprise us. So I would say the verdict is still not out yet,” said Mr Liu Jinshu, investment analyst at SIAS Research, adding that investors will be looking closely at Genting’s profit margin and whether it will beat the lower-than-expected first-quarter results of Marina Bay Sands.
Last week, Marina Bay Sands’ parent company, Las Vegas Sands, reported that the profit margin at the Singapore resort was 48.6 per cent, down from 54.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year.
Analysts at Mumbai-based financial group IIFL which initiated coverage on Genting believes the stock is well-placed to capture the rise of gaming in Asia.
In a report on Monday, IIFL estimated the Asia-Pacific casino gaming sector would grow 24 per cent yearly to US$62.9 billion from last year to 2014.
Singapore, in particular, will be able to tap into this given its position as a gateway to South-east Asia. — The chips were down for the local gaming sector last week but its fortunes are set to change. |
