SEREMBAN, Malaysia: The Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) has expressed concern over the increasing number of "free tours" organised by unknown groups taking Malaysians to casinos in Singapore in recent months.
MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said he was initially under the impression that such tours were only organised from areas in Johor; but had since been told that they were also available in Penang.
"We are not against gambling, but it should not be done in such a manner," he told reporters after opening the 40th annual meeting of the Federation of Malaysia Hawkers Association here.
Describing it as a "serious problem", Dr Wee said even the federation members had tabled a motion seeking the Government's help to put an end to such tours.
The federation, with 70 affiliates, has more than 100,000 members nationwide.
Dr Wee said such tours had caused problems in families.
"Apart from an outflow of funds, there are also social implications," he said.
He added that families of those making regular trips to the casinos were unable to do anything to stop their loved ones from frequenting the gambling sites.
"In Singapore, a wife only needs to call the casino if her husband has been making frequent trips there and the management will bar him from entering the premises.
"But the law does not apply to foreigners, including Malaysians," he said, adding that non-governmental organisations should help the authorities check such activities.
Federation head Lee Teong Chwee said members had complained of a decline in business by 30% to 40% since the "free tours" began.
"People visit the casinos as the transportation is free. So when they have the opportunity, they just hop on the bus and head to Singapore," he said.
Earlier, Dr Wee commended the federation for its plans to raise RM1mil to help members' children who excelled in their studies.
Dr Wee said he also concurred with the federation's appeal that the authorities act against foreigners who had been setting up hawker stalls as this could jeopardise their business. |

ECONOMIC REPORT Nov. 10, 2010, 8:41 a.m. EST Weekly jobless claims fall 24,000 to 435,000Four-week average drops to lowest level in two yearsBy Jeffry Bartash, MarketWatch WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The number of workers who filed new claims for unemployment benefits fell 24,000 last week to 435,000, continuing a recent see-saw pattern that’s given mixed signals about the U.S. labor market. Jobless claims plunged in 2009 as the economy exited recession, but they have been stuck in 450,000 range through the first 10 months of this year in a reflection of weak hiring trends. Economists believe weekly claims have to move toward 400,000 to indicate that hiring is on the upswing, or at least that layoffs are slowing. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected initial claims to fall to a seasonally adjusted 450,000 in the week ended Nov. 6. Claims in 2010 have ranged from a high of 504,000 to a low of 427,000, according to Labor Department data.

Noble Group (N21.SG) 3Q net profit likely flat on-year at US$132 million ($170 million), though may surprise on upside on hardening of global commodity prices, contributions from Argentinian soybean crushing project that started in April, according to Dow Jones poll of 5 analysts. “Noble, with total tonnage of 180 million metric tons is an excellent proxy to increasing demand for both hard and soft commodities with deep footprint in resource rich (countries such as) Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Indonesia and resource hungry countries,” CLSA says in note; expects Noble to become more “solid” company after spending US$1 billion on building assets over US$3 billion spent since 2007. Noble reports earnings after market close today.

Well you are not too far from the truth!
They do use the media to achieve their own agenda.
So just have to read between the lines and use their influence to our advantage.

I remembered posting the employees issue here some time ago.
You know when they submit the resignation letter to HR, the HR tell them , sorry the applications for resignation is full for today....

If that's the case, i am more settled. I believe Genting has a larger pool of visitors which can be substantiated by the following:
1) Genting provide free transport for pp in Johor to SG
2) Sentosa is a must-go place for tourists. So while they are enjoying the sun and the beach , they will also enjoy themself on the gambling table.
3) Genting does not have employee-related internal issues , unlike MBS

Yes, a positive surprise is still possible.
Haha.. thats the interesting and uncertain factor behind stock investing, because it can go either way.
The less risky way, is of course to buy after results are out and not before.
There are pros and cons for both methods.

My thought for GAR is that even if the Q3 result is not good, it is going to have impact on the day of announcement only. Subsequently, price will climb back high again because CPO is already at a high.
My worry lies in GenSP especially on the report posted by BT. Does GenSP Q3 result got to be better than Q2 ($396.5 million) to be consider good result or what ? |
