Gaming revenue here is expected to hit S$6 billion this year, despite many IR attractions not being fully open. The revenue is expected to rise further to S$7 billion to S$8 billion next year, according to Dr Chua.
In comparison,
Las Vegas is set to pull in S$7.5 billion this year and about S$7.8 billion next year.
Macau still retains top spot as the No.1 gaming market at US$23 billion in earnings this year and more than S$26 billion projected for next year.
In Singapore, RWS is likely to book S$1.4 billion in pre-tax profits this year and S$2 billion next year, while MBS is expected to make S$811 million this year and S$1.5 billion next year.
Government coffers are set for a hefty boost too, from company tax, goods and services tax (GST) and casino duties, to the tune of S$1.1 billion this year and S$1.6 billion next year, he said.
Another S$300 million in entry levies collected this year will go to the
Tote Board which funds community projects.
Dr Chua said the figures were based on a conservative estimate of 50,000 visitors in total to both casinos each day this year, assuming 28 per cent of visitors are Singapore residents who have to pay a levy.
The Government charges each Singapore citizen or permanent resident a S$100 entry fee to lower the social costs of the casinos. By May, it had collected S$70 million.
“Contributions from the IRs by themselves may not tip the overall budget deficit position into a surplus… But the IRs have also boosted growth in many tourism-related sectors, including hotels and restaurants, real estate and financial activities,” Dr Chua revealed.
He adds, “The overall fiscal balance will probably turn a small surplus given the sharp V-shaped economic recovery and casino bonanza.”
Head of Asian gaming research in research house CLSA, Aaron Fischer, offers a more optimistic projection. He expects gaming revenues here to hit S$8.5 billion next year and S$10.4 billion in 2012.
Mr Fischer said that Asian tourists are flocking to the
Universal Studios theme park, the
Formula One race, conventions and casinos in Singapore.
“Due to the lower gaming tax, foreign VIP players can be offered higher commissions and rebates which makes Singapore more attractive than Macau, Australia and Las Vegas,” he said.
DBS Bank economist Irvin Seah expects S$5.2 billion will be added to the economy next year out of casino revenue. He said a fiscal surplus could add spice to next year’s Budget, widely tipped as an election one.
Dr Chua said that the income boost could be used to enhance the social safety net.
“Workforce costs the Government S$100 million annually, and benefits around 400,000 low wage workers. Imagine what another S$300,000 million from entry levies or S$1.4 billion in total gaming duties, taxes and levies could do.”
Look out, Las Vegas.
Singapore is hot on its heels to become the world’s No. 2 gaming market next year, a report says.
According to a new report, the Government stands to gain a substantial S$1.38 billion from taxes, duties and levies from both
integrated resorts (IRs) this year.
The figure is set to hit S$2.16 billion next year as the IRs ramp up operations to push Singapore past Las Vegas as the world’s second largest gaming market, said Dr Chua Hak Bin, director of global research at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch on
The Straits Times.
This may even help the Government turn a projected fiscal deficit of roughly S$2.96 billion this year into a small surplus, Mr Chua said in the report. The figures include revenue from IR-related growth such as tourism.
The strong showing at both
Marina Bay Sands (MBS) and
Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has exceeded even the most optimistic of projections for growth.

No leh not very good. Just that when price already up too much I don't dare to buy usually (unless under special circumstances). Contra I don't want to wait too long to sell no matter if it might go up more if wait few more days.
