When I just started, my contra limit that I played was approximate SGD30k to SGD300k as of today. My accumulated losses (losses net of profits) arising from contra when I just started were also growth from SGD20k to current more than SGD200k. I can make SGD30k a day and lose SGD50k a day. I am now in deep debt and owing bank, family and friend of more than SGD200k. As of today, i still have huge open contra position on AP Strat and Albedo.  I am writing this to share with all the contra players (especially newbies) that if you are intending to start or in the beginning stage of playing contras, please think twice and reconsider. You can make fast $$ and also lose a lot too. I am basically broke now (yes - I am unofficially broke) and   I have decided to stop playing contra. My family, career are all badly affected. My wife is suggesting for a divorcement with me and I may be losing my 10 months old baby too. I am into depression, really regret and remorseful of my actions.  I hope this short note will help, hopefully, the newbies or contra players not falling into my situation. I have nothing against investment in stocks (buy and hold for capital gain) but importantly to invest within your means. I am making this post as I think this by sharing my situation with the contra players is the little thing that I may be able to do for the society. Take care & God bless.

 

Like someone say trading is like gambling, Gambling is a addiction..imho say if u play without a plan/strategy, (using praying, hoping guessing) its like jackpot & roulette  . if play like professional poker, or blackjack,   then at least got some strategies to pit against the house.

Play small, refine techniques...dont chase.

the contra blood will dry up by next midwk.

$$ is important but it is not the MOST important in our life.  With a strong faith, supports from loved ones, you be able to walk out of this nightmare soon.

To add to my post, I'm also married and has a kid. When I play, I always think of them to restrict my bet. Until now, I have not lose any 1 month salary. Maybe 1-2k paper loss. Thinking of pulling out after reading your sad post....

playing contra is like playing with fire if you dont have the money to pick up the shares, the brokerage houses can keep the price depressed until your due date is up.

 

We are fighting against the BB, the insiders, shortist  and the trading house. Who are we? We're just small ants.  The moment key in, we're  losing the split and brokage. I'm really sorry to hear your plight, and I really hope that things would get better for you. It's gonna be hard and it will take time to repay your debts, but please do not give up. 

Thanks so much for your note. I've only started trading in July, and my husband and I could only do short-term investing because we are expecting our BTO to be ready in a few months, so we need our cash for reno and furniture purchase. This month, I dabbled into contra as part of my 'learning process'. It did not go well, and we lost close to 2k (just nice wipe out all my profits for the past two months). My losses are nothing as compared to yours, but it's really true that contra is not the way to go. We have since signed up for a CFD account, but I know that is not the way to go too. Once we cleared our renovation and buying furniture, I will be devoting my cash into value investing and nothing else. 

I think that it is important for one not to rush into a trade just because the price is rising rapidly, without looking at charts or seeking confirmation of a uptrend. It's really hard to resist the temptation, and I've made a few mistakes myself. It's hard not to repeat the mistakes, but I'm trying hard now.  

Once again, I really hope that things would work out for you.

me as well, blinded by short term gains when i first started trading

from a few grands of gains till 10 over grands of loss..... maybe small amount as compared to the rest of the traders here, but i dont actually earn much from my routine job uh...

the more you lose, the more you contra on to retrieve back these losses... i believe most of here agree with me


luckily back then, my girlfriend is supportive of me and i managed to walk out from contra and start enjoying life around me... right now, im a long term investor, parking part of my savings in a stock which i believed... fyi, tis woman shall soon be my wife...

my advice? walk out from it, you will see a path..... you are at the bottom and the path can only be better, you are still young.. in no time, you will be able to repay those debts =) your ex wife doesnt leave you cause she doesnt love you, you just got to let your actions do the talking.. hope you understand what i meant

I am sorry to hear about your plight. I guess a lot of times greed get the better of all of us, especially when we are winning, we want to win more, when we lose, we tend to fight back with the stock either by averaging down or holding it instead of cutting losses.

I guess at this junction, you are psychologically weak to carry on trading...if we have too much on our mind, it is hard to make clear decision.

Maybe it's time to take a break for a while, cut your losses, find a job to pay back the debts and seek reconciliation with your loved ones.

Also, in future,  when you are  ready to trade again, can attend courses, seek a good mentor who can guide you, read up books on trading (esp psychology), and I am sure you can be a better trader.

Lastly, don't do anything stupid. This is not the end, life is too precious to be wasted. A lot of times, we see our problems bigger than they are.

Take it a good lesson learnt and seek the Creator for strength, courage and His guidance. I am sure you and your family can overcome this together.
