People out there, some of whom are friends, who have ready cash at an opportune time.

If one has ready cash.. not need use such a bombastic figure. Say 300k, you can easily throw half of that into the stock market, which reaps a better yield than the banks offer with the opportunity to appreciate in value. Provided one has no rush to sell. I think there are folks in their right mind that do so. Perhaps there are peope who choose to do otherwise with their liquid cash.. to each his own. Some keep these as investments until they are ready to cash out. Meanwhile, they can do mid term trades within their own comfornt zone. Some may even contra.

I think we speak a different language. As mentioned earlier, trade within one's own comfort zone. Mine may not be the same as yours. Smiley

Believe it or not, I have never thought about dividends at all.

Those who think of dividends are likely to hold their stocks even

in a biggest market crash of all time.

Only 3-4 years ago, say if one has $500,000 in certain stocks,

if one is thinking of dividends all the time, one's stock could have

fallen to $250,000 (ie, loss of $250,000).

Who in his/her right mind would argue on the merits of dividends in such a case?

Even if one has bought a stock at a good price before it fell,

one would still have lost the previous gains.

And previous gains are solid money too, not just a number... Smiley

Sorry to disappoint you ipunter. I have held stocks which I have bought at their lows (not necessary all time ultimate lows but low enough, and that's okie with me) during 9-11 crash. I do hope you have also had that opportunity as well. To hold stocks and collect on dividends with no rush to sell.

Cheers Smiley

When I say kachang, I don't mean to say it to belittle kachangs...

What I mean is that people will not be satisfied to make kachang...

What they really want is to 'make a killing' in the stock market.

But the only way to become rich in the stock market is to "mau" big.

Again, you must not think by saying that I am encouraging you to "mau"... Smiley

That is why one has to play within one's means. Not to take loans or contra big time as the risk is higher. I always believe in playing with the ability in picking up the stocks (those with dividend yields & low risk of bankruptcy). Ofcoz this is not a full proof strategy. Nothing is guaranteed. I have held some stocks for years, with dividend yields of between 3%-5%, which gives me far better rates than the banks.

This is just my sharing. Do strategise within one's own comfort zone Smiley

You said you have held some stocks for years...

Thus, obviously you have experienced losing your pants...

But I have never held any stock which is going down (downtrend)... Smiley

Losing is always planned for players.  Don't know whether by fate or by purpose.  Many people lost money in stock investment especially when they "speculate" more than they invest.  Like some gurus here, I also always discourage newbies from playing stocks, esp in Singapore because there is a "dark force" culture here that I have long been observed.  Look at the interest shown in our market, and the ticks of the share prices that are always ranged within not more than the commission of the small players..that makes me always question "How to make money?".  Exceptions are there though but they are few.

Hahaha...

'Fecking' the market, or even just frowning at it won't change a thing,

though the stock market  can very often be like sheet.

The best way to play is to make good stock selections (needs work).

Ideally, one should play good stocks (companies) that have not yet risen.

Because once a stock has risen, and on the way up,  it is no point to jump in.

But this is exactly what most people do... And no one can change that too... Smiley
