HAVE YOUR SAY: Students and police caught posing at Manila hostage tragedy site

Controversial photos of students and policemen posing in front of the hijacked bus in which 8 Hong Kong tourists lost their lives are spreading online

Photos of students and policemen posing at the Manila site where Monday's bloody hostage drama happened are being circulated online, particularly on social networking website Facebook and web forums.

Students pose for photographs near the damaged tourist bus involved in an armed hostage in Manila August 24, 2010. Philippine authorities defended on Tuesday their handling of a bus hostage crisis in which eight Hong Kong tourists were killed, but missteps were seen as signs of deeper deficiencies in a country beset by security problems.

Some students were seen smiling while posing during the picture-taking at the site (see picture above)

Having been alerted to the issue, government spokesperson Edwin Lacierda was quoted by local news sites as urging all Filipinos to accord proper respect to the victims of the unfortunate hostage incident.

"Let's not try to belittle the incident. Let's not try to trivialize the incident. Let's respect the situation. Let's respect the place right now," Lacierda said. "It's a place of grief, let's respect."

He then added, "We ask all Filipinos to respect that particular area."

Nine people including the hijacker, decorated ex-policeman Rolando Mendoza, were killed on Monday evening during the final moments of a 12-hour bus hijack tragedy.

Commandos tasked to rescue the hostages, who were mainly Hong Kong tourists, failed to get into the bus for more than an hour after smashing its windows with sledgehammers. The ordeal, which was broadcasted live over major global television networks, has resulted in an international humiliation for the Philippine government.

The bodies of the eight victims were on Wednesday night flown back to Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Philippine president Benigno Aquino's appeal for a stop to government bashing on Facebook over the tragic incident has been ignored by the Internet users.

His official Facebook page, originally intended to promote transparency in government, has been flooded with protesters' angry comments on the government's incompetencies in handling the crisis that resulted in nine deaths.

"Shame on you and your government. Tender your resignation now," wrote Elfis Lee, a Hong Kong resident. "Your incompetence of leading your untrained stupid police force caused such a tragedy."

Life-long learners

LOS ANGELES —

For every year a person stays in fulltime learning, the risk of suffering memory loss and loss of control falls by 11 per cent, researchers from Cambridge University found.

Researchers believe that education makes the brain more flexible and improves its ability to offset the symptoms of conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

“Our study shows education in early life appears to enable some people to cope with a lot of changes in their brain before showing dementia symptoms,” said researcher Dr Hanna Keage.

Education helps the brain stave off the effects of dementia, a new study claims. AGENCIES

People with Parkinson’s

LOS ANGELES —

Researchers have found a molecule that causes the nerve cell death in the brain that sparks the condition.

The discovery was described as a “significant step forward” in the battle against the degenerative disease, a movement disorder characterised by uncontrollable shaking and loss of co-ordination of muscles.

Professor Lu Bingwei and his team at Stanford University found that the genetic mutation in fruit flies led to the overproduction of at least two proteins that can cause brain cells to die. After toning down the levels of the proteins, “the flies no longer got symptoms of Parkinson’s”, he said.

Testing on mammals of pharmaceuticals which would reduce the level of the two proteins would soon begin, Prof Lu added. “The clinical impact of our findings may be five to 10 years down the road.”Parkinson’s disease sufferers have been offered new hope after the gene mutation which triggers it was identified by scientists.

Good news for ...

People with paralysis

TEL AVIV —

Scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, are testing a “sniff detector” that is able to pick up pressure

changes in the wearer’s nasal cavity and convert it into electrical signals.

The device can then be hooked up to special software and used to move a cursor on a computer screen or control a wheelchair.

It was tested on three people with locked-in syndrome, a paralysis that “locks” a fully intact mind into a paralysed body.

One patient, a 51-year-old woman who was left unable to move, speak or blink after a stroke, was able to communicate for the first time using the new technology.

After 19 days learning to produce a sniff on demand, she was able to write her family a message for the first time.

The system is still in its development stages, said its developers.People with severe paralysis may soon be able to surf the Internet or drive a wheelchair simply by breathing, according to scientists in Israel.

If you’re still alive — duck!

LONDON

A team of experts, including some working for Nasa, believes the 560m-wide object has a 1-in-1,000 chance of an impact 172 years from now.

The odds of a crash are considerably shorter than those given for the asteroid Apophis, which has a 1-in-250,000 chance of striking Earth in 2036.

Prof Maria Eugenia Sansaturio from the Universidad de Valladolid in Spain told — A giant asteroid called 1999 RQ36 may crash into Earth on Sept 24, 2182, scientists believe.Universe Today that knowledge of the risk posed “may help design in advance mechanisms aimed at deviating the asteroid’s path”.

A step closer to finding the ‘GOD particle’

PARIS — A thousand physicists working at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, reported in Paris on Monday that they had not found the “God particle” — yet. But they are beginning to figure out where it is not.

Marriage with a dog
Selva Kumar married a 10-year-old female dog named Selvi to atone for stoning to death two dogs he found engaging in mating when he was a teenager. “After that my legs and hands got paralyzed and I lost hearing in one ear,” Kumar said. The groom also said that he would take care of it until its death.

Smoking out the ‘oxymoron’

Ng Jing Yn g

jingyng@mediacorp.com.sg

SINGAPORE

Singapore’s Subutex experience — when heroin-users became addicted to the replacement substance — is a reminder for him about the efficacy of harm reduction strategies.

And the negative results from the introduction of “low tar”, “light” or “mild” cigarettes as well as Snus, a smokeless tobacco product, suggests that “a less harmful tobacco product is an oxymoron”, said Mr Khaw.

So, despite Dr Lam Pin Min’s and Dr Fatimah Lateef’s suggestions, the minister is sticking with the new tobacco control measures in the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) (Amendment) Bill that Parliament approved yesterday.

Mr Khaw had called for the amendments to ban emerging products that may even be packaged to resemble candy.

According to statistics from Singapore Customs, 484 travellers made duty and GST payments on smokeless tobacco last year.

The debate on the Bill was an opportunity for some Members of Parliament — out of the 11 who spoke — to also voice strong opposition to smoking, especially in relation to young smokers. Mr Khaw said policing on tobacco retail outlets will be stepped up.

MP Alvin Yeo (Hong Kah) asked if the legislative changes, which would impose changes on cigarette package labelling, would contravene certain intellectual property obligations, as “Lights” and “Mild” are registered trademarks here.

Mr Khaw said that international obligations have been taken into consideration.

Less easy to tackle is the issue of tobacco companies using platforms such as movies and the Internet to entice consumers, he said in reply to MP Sin Boon Ann (Tampines).

“How do we censor out scenes of modern-day James Deans ... smoking a particular brand of cigarettes?” asked Mr Khaw.

Besides addressing issues on the proposed amendments, Mr Khaw responded to calls to extend the smoking ban to void decks and corridors.

He will suggest this to the National Environment Agency.— While two Members of Parliament, both doctors, think that some tobacco products can help smokers kick the habit, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan is not only a sceptic, he thinks it would be disastrous.
