True. Bear is more destructive because it hits the bottom faster. But in the long run, Bull is still the Big WINNER.

Well said. Strong bull becomes stronger. Strong bear becomes stronger.

Market volume yesterday was really really very very low... I can't remember seeing just low volumes before. This is not a good sign. Retail players and BBs alike are staying away.

hi, thanks again for all word of wisdom. yes, i am into the STI ETF only this august, and i can say that there is not much losses i made, so i am unsure now to whether to wait for rebound or just cut loss a bit as the effect of olympic did not happened as most of the analysis prediction ![]() i know ETF will rebound some day, but when is that day? issit in years or months? or rather to put it this way, when will the STI market rebound back to 3000+ or more? hope everything will be clear when the new US president is elected in november, cheers ![]() |

i have been hearing some experts (e.g. brokers, those stocks seminars) saying that the market will bottom and spring back up when nobody dares to trade...so i presume that it means the volume will actually need to be extremely low when even the pros have given up on trading...but just how low is low.....

zzz. at this stage, dont be tempted by any increase in px if it's not corresponded by increase in vol. nah, novicex. what i'm saying isn't my words, or even something new. it's what all traders know... trader88 pointed out rightly: a 50% loss => you need 100% to make back. it's all part of money management. which is the first step before you invest. Too many funds now just ask you to put in your money, and show you all the pretty graphs of increase, but they never talk about risk or stop losses or anything. |

wow.. more words of wisdom from singaporegal and elf.. If only I have met this forum much earlier.. most ppl think that the entry price is impt in making money.. like what elf said, it's important not to lose money (so you'll end up making money) You think about the loss you make now when you execute 'cut loss' and feel pain.. Of cos it can go higher but think about the greater pain later when it falls even lower and all the stress you have to go through daily.. that cannot be substitute with money.. the little gain you make from the slight raise is not really worth it. |

yea.. cost averaging must be done rightly, and at certain points only, not a buy buy buy all the way while it drops. (-_-"). and certainly not for some counters that are likely going to die til the next bull run yonks from now. a lot depends on individual mentality though. If you tell most people to cut now, their response tends to be, "siao ah! lose so much already, still tell me to cut!". (+_+) it can sometimes be very difficult to advise people, esp when, if it goes up a bit later, they'll go, "seee, why you tell me to cut!" (just speaking in generalities here; the typical singaporean mentality when it comes to investing.). i dunno, personally, i always cut loss very fast and at an early stage. looking back, there are times when i can kill myself for selling too early, but as livermore said, if you look at net position, then well, i'm glad i cut. Counters like cosco, yzj, etcetc. I had played cosco abt 6 to 7.5. then when it was done, the $5 range and the $4 range. all rapid trades. If i had held instead the first position of $6+, insisting on fundamentals, will just be crying now. |

Well said, bro! Bravo! For discussion purpose... Falling from $1 cost to 50c = 50% loss. To recoup that "50%" loss from 50c (back to $1 cost), 100% gain must be achieved!

One cannot compare with the rich. Their "huge loss" is nothing. For us preservaton of capital is extremely vital.

Yeah some financial advisors say invest now and in 3 years the rewards will come. Some of them say do dollar cost averaging. Dollar cost averaging should be done in the right way. Some of the shares out there dropped from $3 last year to now $1.35. If you had done dollar cost averaging from $2 (thinking it is cheap) till now, your losses would be enormous. With a huge loss, then one say wait for 3 years. Does it make sense to have a huge paper loss and be stuck for 3 years? When dollar cost averaging is done worngly, you find yourself in huge losses and with not much bullets. You might use some small bullets to make "kopi money" and rejoice but it does not hide the fact of huge losses. We always calculate our net position not the small gains we make. If you have huge losses and when market recovers, you would be in the process of recovering your loss but others would be in the process of making profit.

whatever singaporegal said below. ![]() if you're willing to sit longterm, then this current dip shouldn't distress you actually. wait for bottom and buy in... at the very least, you know that an index will someday recover (even if it takes years). which august did you mean anyway, last year or this? if it's this year, it isn't such a big loss yet. ![]() your supports are at 272 and 242. fyi only, usual caveat applies. no HK market. if i had known, i wouldn't bother waking up so early. ![]() |
