STI to cross 3000 boosted by long-term investors

Anyone here can tell why HSI have a sudden drop ? now is -330 , think pm session might be worse and worse...... anyone any idea ????

STI now is in the red. HSI got trouble, I think, now they are in red as well. Later may be turning into maloon liao. Cautious liao, esp in the pm. |

Let's take a step back for now. I just saw the actual charts for HSI and STI; open low closed higher (HSI didn't do as well because of Europe opening gap down around the 3pm-4pm window). Isn't it amazing how despite the 504pt selloff, STI only drop 25pt??? As expected, gap down BUT closed higher! Frankly, I suspect Dow will actually close slightly green instead. A few signs of potential rebound: 1. 2 banks kena big time liao (one bankrupt, one kena buyout); 2. AIG another shortist target today, but still alive; even if it collapses, yesterday's Dow more or less priced it in. The newsflow was already there since Sun! 3. Look again at Dow charts (use 3-yr history, it was a support level tested 5 times!). 10700 is a very very interesting level. I suspect it will be tested tonight, but once Fed finalises the rate cut (looking at USDJPY/oil, 0.25% already priced in, suspect it might even be 0.5%), it's likely one will see recovery to the pt that Dow will be green. 4. Yesterday Dow's collapse was on very high volume (almost twice the norm for last 10 days). Looks close to what I call terminal volume. After that it's normally consolidation/reversal. 5. If one looks at some of the STI heavyweights very carefully (banks, Citydev, Singtel, SGX) - they gapped down on opening, BUT all closed higher than the opening price! Think hard why this is the case. Merely shortcovering? Some even turned green today. Weird eh.... I might be wrong, but frankly, I think there will be major shortcovering tomorrow, unless the Asian markets all gap up a lot right at the opening. |

Just for info sharing...FED, GOLDMAN WATCHED The U.S. Federal Reserve announces its rate decision at 1815 GMT. Fed fund futures point to an 86 percent chance of a 25-basis point rate cut. "Expectations of a rate cut have increased dramatically in the last few days, with most people now expecting a cut, though we still think rates will be held," said Henk Potts, strategist at Barclays Stockbrokers. "If rates are cut, you could argue both ways. The optimists will say it shows the Fed will use every weapon in their armoury to help the markets. The pessimists will say it shows desperation, and it's a sign of how weak the economy is." Goldman Sachs will report third-quarter earnings later in the session. "They've managed to dodge the sub-prime bullets so far. What will be perhaps most interesting is what they say about trading going forward," said Potts. |

FOMC to cut interest rate tonight. I think cut or not, DJ will go down. With so many negative events happening lately, I doubt the DJ will perform well. Perhaps when they cut, the DJ rally for the first half. Then plummet on the 2nd half of the trading. As the regional mkt is factoring the rate cut and rally in the afternoon, and if FOMC dun cut, the DJ will go down and 'downer' and downest!...LOL, new English! | ||
