Nuclear fuel is a material that can be 'consumed' by fission or fusion to derive nuclear energy. Nuclear fuels are the most dense sources of energy available. Nuclear fuel in a nuclear fuel cycle can refer to the fuel itself, or to physical objects (for example bundles composed of fuel rods) composed of the fuel material, mixed with structural, neutron moderating, or neutron reflecting materials. Most nuclear fuels contain heavy fissile elements that can be made to undergo a nuclear fission chain reaction in a nuclear reactor. The most common fissile nuclear fuels are Uranium 235 (235U) and Plutonium 239 (239Pu). The actions of mining, refining, purifying, using, and ultimately disposing of these elements together make up the nuclear fuel cycle. |

14 april   TOKYO (AP) -- The operator of Japan's tsunami-flooded nuclear power complex was seeking ways Thursday to pull damaged spent fuel rods out of a storage pool at one of its reactors, citing surging radiation and elevated temperatures as worrisome signs. The troubling signals at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex come as frustrations grow with Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s handling of the crisis, which has progressed fitfully since a March 11 tsunami swamped the plant, knocking out crucial cooling systems. Restoring them will take months. Frequent aftershocks from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that triggered the monstrous waves are unwelcome reminders of the disaster and are impeding work on the cooling systems. The government earlier this week revised its rating of the severity of the crisis to level 7, the worst possible on an international scale. The only other level 7 was the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, though that explosion released 10 times the radioactivity that has come from Fukushima Dai-ichi so far. |

on us electronic sector....... potentially affecting asia..........????? 14 april   SEATTLE (Reuters) - Computer sales slid lower in the first three months of this year for the first time since 2009 as shoppers suffered post-holiday shopping fatigue, Apple Inc's iPad continued to attract buyers and Japan focused on recovering from the earthquake and tsunami. The world's biggest personal computer (PC) makers, Hewlett-Packard Co, Acer Inc and Dell Inc all saw year-on-year declines. The dip is a warning sign for chipmaker Intel Corp and software giant Microsoft Corp, whose fortunes are closely tied to growth in the PC market. PC sales fell 1.1 percent in the first quarter to 84.3 million worldwide, according to tech research firm Gartner, well short of its forecast for 3 percent growth. The dip was the first since the second quarter of 2009, when most of the world was still in the grip of economic turmoil. |

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. fighter jets are still attacking Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's air defenses even after NATO took over full command of Libya operations earlier this month, the Pentagon said on Wednesday. The disclosure came as Libyan rebels struggle to gain ground from Gaddafi's forces and NATO allies squabble publicly over stepping up air strikes to help topple him. The Pentagon said previously it would not conduct strike sorties after April 4 without a specific request from the Brussels-based NATO alliance. But it clarified on Wednesday that this did not apply to attacks on Gaddafi's air defenses, which have continued. Pentagon officials said the attacks on Libyan air defenses did not mean the United States had reconsidered its decision to take a limited support role in the Libya conflict. " It is completely consistent with how we have described our support role ever since the transition to NATO lead," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters. But the strikes raise new questions about the future air campaign in Libya as Gaddafi hangs on and Britain and France call for more allied participation in the air strikes against Gaddafi's heavy weapons and on arming the rebels. |
