I would say you are a A1 trader if you manage to sell before a major correction and buy back at lower price. In this way, you actually make more than the person who bought and hold. In reality it is not so easy but possible given what indicator you ses in your chart. But if you trade in and out within the small corrections, really it is a waste of time. You ride on the major trend, not on the minor trend. But in this market from what I have seen, chosing the right stock makes a lot of difference.A few stocks that were performers last time have failed to shine

I do not need to advise my friend. He is a lot smarter than you think.He already told me when he intends to sell. Of course he is not so stupid to buy stocks at market peak and hold. Of course he will lose if he does that. I have absolulely no doubt if we compare apple to apple i.e if my friend and you have the same capital to start off with, at this point of the market, he made far more than those who over traded.

no end to this debate.. the winners are the ones who make money.... those who sold at the high of AIG (May 08- Sep 08) made the most money... .. those who read charts and interpretated as opportunities will continue to lose and lose till lau sai... hindsight 20/20.... still need to have luck since retail investors will never know the beast in a very big company... so i prefer company with simple business model.. |

Your friend is a long-term investor and the high risk type some more. He probability brought some good stocks and will hold them as long as he can. It is great to hold good stocks and even better to be able to hold them long term.But if he did not know how to read charts, how does he knows if the companies he invested is in trouble and he need to bail out fast? I've friends like your friend, who are long-term investors, invested in AIG. At the hight of AIG, AIG stock was trading at $1,450. Now it's trading at $34. Imaging your investment drop 92%, your $100 becomes $2. This is the faith of some long-term investors not knowing how to read charts. I don't think long-term investors make more money than traders. Only smart investors and smart traders make more money than ignorance players. You should advice your friend to learn how to read charts.

The answer is neither. Whether a pure chartist exit the market or not depends on whether if he a shortist or not. If he is a shortist, he will trade all year round. If he is not a shortist, he will trade during the Bull market, which is between Mar 09 and Jan 10. No pure chartist will exit the market in mid-Jun or July. Only scare or cautious players will exit the market during that time.
