SELL IN MAY

May trading gets underway on Monday. Will the old adage "sell in May and go away" play out this year?

According to the Financial Times, the theory worked from 1980 through 2000, with the markets producing positive returns only 50% of the time in the May through October period.

But the theory has failed the last 9-years, with investors actually seeing more positive returns in the May through October period than in the November through April period.

This rule is set during the old days, before the Internet years.

Before there was the internet, most traders goes for holiday during May and June; and could not trade while they are away, so they close their position and market falls.

Now, with the internet. Traders can go holiday and trade at the same time, they don't have to close their position, so the market is open all year round.

People who follows this rule without asking why the rule is set in the 1st place, will miss out lots of opportunities.

Hmm sounds logical.... so shld sell into strength next few weeks...

I will be wary if someone tells me he knows when the market is going to turn.

The true is nobody knows for sure how short this bear is going to be.

Could be days, could be weeks, or could be months.

However, we can make intelligent guess.

As there is no real bad news, other than the loan to Greece, which I think they are going to get; and China's curb on it's property market, which I think is a good thing.

I guessing about 2 weeks after most dividends are XD, which is around end of May or beginning of Jun.

An old remisier friend of mine used to say he'd hold for 10 years if necessary.

Many people belong to this type, who are able to bear being 'pok!' for long periods, while they wait for their stocks to return to previous levels...

On the other hand, there are types (like me) who can't even bear to think of losing any amount for long. To be pok! for indefinite periods is not my cup of tea...

I'd rather get out and be free to buy again cheaply (and more) at a later stage of a bear market.... Smiley
