STI to cross 3000 boosted by long-term investors

Continued volatility expected for Singapore stocks By Ryan Huang | Posted: 11 May 2010 2201 hrs SINGAPORE : The Singapore stock market is expected to remain volatile amid fears of contagion from the debt problems in Greece. But market watchers say that may present some buying opportunities and more attractive valuations. They also say the bigger risk is not Greece, but China's measures to cool its economy. Stock markets have been on a roller-coaster ride in recent weeks due to fears that the debt crisis in Greece may spread beyond its shores. The European Union has set aside US$1 trillion to contain the crisis and defend the euro. Some Singapore investors may breathe a sigh of relief for now, but analysts say the potential risks for local investors are closer to home. Roger Tan, head of Research, SIAS Research, said: "We are keeping our eye on China itself... China has come out with a lot cooling off measures to try to reduce its asset prices, to cool off the asset bubble. "We are hoping that China doesn't become the turning point where it affects the economic growth and the economic momentum that's now in place. The fear is that somewhere along the line where they over tighten and some parts of the economy spirals down and creates a vicious cycle downwards, and that vicious cycle cannot be effectively captured or stopped. "Then you have an economic issue ahead - you get people poorer, there's less spending, then there's less production, and the GDP just keeps going downwards. So far, we have not seen that yet, but we are keeping an eye on it." Observers believe Singapore investors are likely to remain jittery until they see more positive news such as a better second quarter earnings season. However, experts largely agree that the fundamentals in Asian markets are in place, which present a good opportunity to buy on dips. In Singapore, analysts say sectors such as banks, technology and tourism-related industries could see some 20 to 30 per cent upside from current levels. Wong Sui Jau, general manager, fundsupermart.com, said: "Within Singapore, your banking sector should be doing very well, because it's generally co-related to the direction of the Singapore economy - and that's actually going through a very strong period of growth this year. "Banks here don't have that kind of exposure, bad debts, etc that you're talking about, that the European banks would potentially have." Experts are forecasting that Singapore's benchmark STI will reach between 3,300 and 3,400 points by the end of the year. - CNA/al |
