NEW YORK, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Bankers are expecting massive growth in 2011, but if the anticipated return of real estate and banking deals doesn't happen, Reuters Quantitative Analyst Mike Tarsala says growth could be far slower.

However, on Friday the mood brightened after an unexpected rise in factory activity in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region, a dip in jobless claims for the 2nd week plus a rise in housing starts.

On Friday, Jakarta gained 0.3%, Philippines closed 0.4% firmer and M'sia (KLSE) rose 0.2%. Vietnam jumped 1.1% and S'pore (FTSTI) 0.2%. Bucking the trend, Thai (SETI) fell 0.7% led by energy shares. "Things have slowed down and unless we have some very exciting event, we'll see the same trend throughout December," said Vikas Kawatra, head of institutional broking at top Thai broker Kim Eng Securities. "But investors are still bullish in the region and the main challenge for the next year will be sustaining high earnings as we won't see the same GDP growth as this year.

Markets are also expensive, though not expensive enough to scare off investors." Indonesia is trading at 14.4 times this year's projected earnings, the highest in the region and compared to all-Asia's 13.3. Thai is trading at 12.4, lower than the 13.8 M'sia and S'pore and 13.0 for the Philippines, Thomson Reuters (data shows.)

Analysts say high valuations may now be deterring foreign investors. On Friday Indonesia saw a net foreign outflow of $45.6 mil and Philippines $10.4 mil. However, Bangkok saw an inflow of $5.4 mil.

In S'pore, shares in Contel Corp , a Chinese digital media products maker, jumped 33.3%, a day after the firm said it would be taken over by AuzMinerals Resource Group in a $1.2 bil reverse takeover. It had surged as much as 50% in early trade.

In last week, STI lost 32 points from the opening of 3185 and close lower at 3153. A black candle stick with little upper/lower shadow affirms that index is range bounding aimlessly along the critical support at 3148.

Key Economics Data report:

2011 has to be bullish!

That’s certainly the sentiment of the Wall Street’s economist who predicts that S&P 500 will be gaining double-digit and finish 2011 at 1400 or higher due to improving global economy and better earnings ahead.

In the next two holiday weeks, investors are most probably sitting on the sidelines and trading volume for US markets are expected to be low.

Important US Economics Announcement:

Wednesday: 2^nd revision to 3Q US GDP

Thursdays: Weekly jobless claims, personal income and consumer sentiment.

US Markets are closed Friday for the Christmas Eve.

Technical Analysis on STI

STI index continue to trend directionless under low trading volume as the holiday season mood approaches.

1) In weekly charts, black candle stick with little upper/lower shadow indicates on the directionless of the market and most traders are keeping sidelined.

2) The weekly trading volume falls lower as the holiday season draw nearer.

3) MACD and RSI indicators are bearish as MACD lines cross down in this week.

4) STI is currently supported by the resistance turned support at 3148.

5) STI range bound between 3213 to 3148 as investors are hesitant to trade on uncertainty ahead.

Important resistance of STI: 3213 (Daily charts)

Dec is almost over. Jan 2011 a little too soon, Feb 2011 chinese new year period (ppl celebrating festive season), Perhaps, March 2011?? There is one week school holiday, some schools could be used for election venues. Sounds logical? I hope so!

Technical Comment from The Edge - Short term & medium term : downtrend

Index is looking increasingly like a head-and-shoulders top formation and is in the process of breaking its neckline at 3,100 to 3,120 range. The breakdown points to target at 2,900.
