Ferrari F1 barcode a hidden cigarette ad? Critics say Ferrari’s red, white and black bar code logo plastered on their racing cars and on the overalls of their drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, is subliminal advertising for Marlboro cigarettes, said A spokesman for the European Public Health Commissioner has urged the Spanish and British governments to investigate whether Marlboro may have broken the law. Formula One teams are due to race in Spain in less than two weeks and in Britain in July. Dr John Britton, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and director of its tobacco advisory group, said: “The bar code looks like the bottom half of a packet of Marlboro cigarettes. I was stunned when I saw it. This is pushing at the limits. If you look at how the bar code has evolved over the last four years, it looks like creeping branding.” The Times of London. Cigarette advertising is banned for sporting events under European Union legislation. |

Tobacc o firms target As ian women Advertisements telling smokers they are smarter, more energetic and better lovers than their nonsmoking counterparts are a familiar sight across Bangladesh — something unimaginable in most other countries. One in a rural area, Dr Bennoor remembers, said that “if a lady smokes, her baby will be smaller and it will be easier to deliver, the labour will be less painful”. “These are very ruthless advertisements,” said Dr Bennoor, an associate professor at Bangladesh’s National Hospital for Chest Diseases. The promotion is being linked to an alarming rise in tobacco use in the impoverished South Asian country, particularly among women and the young. Bangladesh fits a pattern emerging across the region of rising rates of female tobacco use, particularly in South-east Asian countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Cambodia. The World Health Organisation warns that tobacco companies are targeting women in developing countries as a new growth market. Bangladeshi chest doctor Saifuddin Bennoor has seen many misleading cigarette advertisements, but the one that suggested smoking could make childbirth easier beats them all.AFP |

SYDNEY Cigarettes will be sold in plain, standardised packages carrying large, graphic warnings against smoking — and the brand name in small print — from 2012, under proposed legislation. The government also sharply raised taxes on cigarettes by 25 per cent, adding about A$2 ($2.50) to a packet of 30, with the proceeds being ploughed in to healthcare. “Cigarettes are not cool, cigarettes kill people,” said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. “This will be the most hardline regime for cigarette packaging anywhere in the world,” he added. “The big tobacco companies will hate what we are doing,” Mr Rudd said. “The government however makes no apology what for what we are doing — it is the RIGHT decision.” * UNpopular but RIGHT for the PEOPLE * The World Health Organisation said yesterday it was “delighted” with Australia’s decision. Australia’s plan “sets a new gold standard for the regulation of tobacco products”, it said. “With this major breakthrough, Australia has taken a stand against all forms of advertising of a product that kills half of the people who use it.” # Government which allows sale of tobacco knowingly MURDER HALF the SMOKERS ? ? ? ? # Imperial Tobacco Australia said it planned to challenge the ban on the grounds that it would affect its profits, arguing that branding has commercial value. “Introducing plain packaging just takes away the ability of a consumer to identify our brand from another, and that’s of value to us,” a spokeswoman said. “It really affects the value of our business as a commercial enterprise and we will fight to support protecting our international property rights.” — Australia said yesterday it would become the world’s first country to ban logos and branding on cigarette packets, sparking a furious response from the tobacco industry.AGENCIES
