China overcapacity problem could surface in H2 - Lehman Bros
2/29/2008 3:10:00 PM
BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - China's overcapacity problem is likely to become more evident in the second half of this year when exports ease as the global economy slows, Lehman Brothers said

China's booming exports - the export/GDP ratio jumped to 36 pct in 2007 from 21 pct in 2000 - have helped keep overcapacity at bay, but the problem will be exposed later this year as the export outlook darkens and China's economic growth slows, Lehman Brothers economist Sun Mingchun said

"China may not appear to have a serious overcapacity problem now, but multiple indicators suggest that one could be looming. We would expect the problem to start to be unmasked in the third quarter when we forecast GDP growth to fall to 9.6 pct year-on-year," Sun said in a note

He said the new export orders component of China's Purchasing Managers' Index fell below the "boom-bust" line of 50 in January for the first time in three years, suggesting the export outlook is worsening

"About a quarter of China's industrial production is exported, so the weakening of these export leading indicators raises the risk of overcapacity surfacing later this year," Sun said

He also noted that sales growth could slow, causing an abrupt spike in the inventory/sales ratio, while there are signs that capacity utilization is falling, as are retail prices of many manufactured products

"The increase in China's production capacity in the manufacturing sector has been so fast that it could easily prove excessive when demand weakens significantly," he added. will.davies@afxasia.com MMMM

For buyers, I rather wait for 8.10 the long-term support if i wan to enter a long position.. $8.10 is just a temporary support formed during the recent sell-down.. got to be careful and stay alert for any drastic movement. I think it will be tested and break easily.. as wat elf had say, strong resistance is at $8.50.

oh today its tested its support at 0.38 formed on 6/2/08. Hope it will be breached.. if not, free falling into the bottomless pit. however, it still trading within the general downtrend with trading resistance of 0.42..

any rebound will be a good time to cut loss or take profit.

caveat emptor applies to all the above

wish all those vested all the best!

but something to take note. Palm oil is taken as alternative fuel or substitute to vegetable and corn oil.. High plam oil cost will reduce demand of it.. as it make no $$ sense to pay higher price for something alternative..

recently china govt also implemented price curb which may also affect these counter too.. since china is the price setter being the biggest consumer.

just my 2cents worth.

Yes elf.. same sentiments.. been calling for sell too if u can see from my previous replies..

I heard rumours going round that some smaller shipbuilders are having cancellations of orders.. and recently have become more rampant.. So with the slowing of US economy resulting a slowdown in global trade. Definitely, shipping and shipbuilding industries will be badly hit.

And considering the current PE of  20X is consider very high and unattractive.. and moving forward, earning and orders should come down.. this baby is definitely overvalued.

I personally will only look at this counter when it come down to its IPO price or better.

Any potential tech rebound will be a good time to cut loss or take profit..

caveat emptor applies to all the above

I know that i will get attack by some ardent supporter of BIG when i post the reply but i just wan to inform those sideline who intend to go into BIG. Of cos, its up to them to make their own decision. Online forum is a place for ppl to share their views and info.. be in favourable or unfavourable..

FYI, the CEO din bought the share, its offered by the company to him and have not been exercise yet. most company give their CEO share options too.. BIG is not the only one.

Anyway, I am not vested. I just feel that this counter is highly traded by short-term traders, so long-term buyers beware.. its a highly speculative stock. wat for buy at high when you can get lower..

wish all those vested good luck!

this counter is died.. how to cheong when no insti interest?? and the news of emloyee share option is no good news at all... its dilutive by nature and its definitely not good news for existing shareholders.. lesser EPS and anyway BIG is not profitable yet..

I dun think it will stay above 80c
