ICAP sues 38 brokers to stop defection

SINGAPORE

ICAP handles US$1 trillion ($1.31 trillion) in daily trades and “in one fell swoop” risked losing long-standing relationships with customers including Goldman Sachs Group, Merrill Lynch and JPMorgan Chase, said Mr Kim Rosenkilde, chief executive officer of London-based ICAP’s Asian operations, in papers filed with the Singapore High Court this month.

The group had access to confidential data including clients’ list, trading strategies and brokers’ pay, ICAP said.

The information, if wrongfully disclosed, would give its competitors “a unique opportunity to mount a wholesale raid on” ICAP’s workforce, according to the papers.

Mr Rosenkilde emailed Mr Steve Miles, managing director of Tradition’s Singapore operations on Sept 12, informing the Swiss broker that the group would be breaching their employment contracts and ICAP would protect its legal rights, according to the papers.

ICAP has about 300 employees in Singapore.

The court ordered Lausanne, Switzerland-based Tradition on Sept 22 to stop recruiting ICAP’s brokers until the dispute is resolved, ICAP spokesman Mike Sheard said in an email statement.

“Although the situation is somewhat uncertain, its potential impact is not currently regarded as likely to be material for the purposes of ICAP’s results,” he said.

Tradition declined to comment, as did the brokers’ lawyers.

Tradition and the group have not filed their statements of defence.

The group breached their employment agreements because they failed to disclose that they had been approached by Tradition, did not serve the full term of their contracts and submitted resignations before a deadline would have allowed, ICAP said.

“Brokers operate as a tightly knitted team,” ICAP said. The men are “therefore in a position to exert considerable influence over the brokers remaining”.

A Tradition employee said in a Sept 9 instant message to one of ICAP’s brokers that the Swiss interdealer broker “will be an old ICAP bookies alumni”, according to the court papers.— ICAP Plc, the world’s biggest broker of trades between banks, has sued 38 of its dealers in Singapore and Swiss rival Compagnie Financiere Tradition SA in a bid to block them from defecting.

When real estate can lead to better returns

Chris Howells

christopherh@mediacorp.com.sg

SINGAPORE

This comes as the sovereign wealth fund said it expects slower growth in developed economies for the next 10 years.

“The macroeconomic environment over the next 10 years would be characterised by slower growth in the developed economies in anticipation of these developments, GIC has decided to increase further out investments in the emerging economies, especially in Asia,” said Ng Kok Song, group chief investment officer, GIC.

He gave the comments at a CFA Institute conference on private wealth management in Singapore yesterday.

GIC expects global GDP to grow by 3.8 per cent this year, with advanced economies growing 2.4 per cent and emerging Asia growing at 8 per cent.

It also said industrial output in emerging Asia has recovered fully and now stands 12 per cent above pre-crisis levels, while developed economy output remains 2 per cent below levels seen two years ago.

“In terms of contribution to growth, Asia will contribute 50 per cent to global growth this year although its share of global GDP is 34 per cent. China’s contribution to global growth will be 26 per cent and India’s 10 per cent, compared with 15 per cent from the United States and 10 per cent from Euroland,” he added.

As of end March this year, GIC’s exposure to emerging market equities was 10 per cent, or about one fifth of its global equity portfolio.

In GIC’s annual report released on Monday, it said it had recouped most of its losses made during the financial crisis as stock markets have rebounded. The state investor added that gains in the last fiscal year lifted its 20-year nominal annual rate of return to 7.1 per cent from 5.7 per cent in US dollar terms.

While GIC had raised its investment in stock markets in developed countries, but it is increasingly turning its attention to emerging Asia.

Private wealth industry leaders also see Asia’s growth creating more affluence.

According to the CFA Institute, in 2009, high net worth individuals, those with assets greater than US$100 million ($132 million), rose 26 per cent on 2008.

This trend is likely to continue, with double digit growth in the number of high net worth individuals in 2011.

And Singapore has kept pace with that growth with a 33 per cent rise in the number of high net worth individuals here, said Steve Horan, head of professional education content and private wealth at CFA Institute.— The Government of Singapore Investment corporation (GIC) said real estate and private equity investments can lead to better returns than equities in its emerging markets investment strategy.

0310 GMT [Dow Jones] Genting Singapore (G13.SG) down 1.0% at S$1.93, extending yesterday's 3.5% fall, as investors still wary after CEO Tan Hee Teck's recent sale of his own shares in open market. News contributing to stock's fall of as much as 13.3% since reaching 52-week high of S$2.18 last week. Near-term support at 30-day moving average, last at S$1.82. "We see the selldown as an opportunity to accumulate as it does not change our fundamental view of the group, as employee stock option of upper management staff does get replenished anyway and the CEO still has 1.1 million employee stock option shares remaining," says OSK, which has Buy call with S$2.65 target. Having substantially outperformed Singapore market since returning to profitability in 2Q10, stock's performance for rest of year hinges largely on 3Q10 results, likely due in November. (frankie.ho@dowjones.com)

I think sometimes as a CEO, one still must do some profit taking.  Smiley
