Mio issues still persist ...

Suggestions to improve mio Voice situation have been futile

Letter from Douglas Tan

I ENTERED into a two-year mio Plan contract with SingTel some time in October 2009. For the last year, I have been calling the technical support line for help with several issues but the problems associated with mio Voice remain unresolved.

The problems include me being unable to make outgoing calls — there is no dial tone and being unable to receive calls. Our relatives need to call our mobile phones to alert us that our home telephone line is “jammed” again or that it is difficult to hear us.

On one occasion, even the phone support officer had difficulty hearing me. The line becomes disconnected during a conversation, which is especially troublesome if I am hosting a phone conference.

Each time, technical support will suggest that I solve the problem by switching the power of the mio box on and off again. A house visit would then be arranged, which meant I would have to apply for leave and wait at home for my mio box to be replaced.

I would then be asked to monitor if the problem will recur.

During the last year, many suggestions were given, including replacing my cordless phone with a corded unit, replacing the micro filters (I have used all my spares!) and connecting the telephone line to a different socket on the mio box. I have even replaced the telephone cord from the wall outlet to the mio box which required me to shift the wall cabinet in my living room.

I have followed all the suggestions but the problem still persists. In the two recent house visits, senior technicians were sent and in both visits, the wall socket was removed and wires were cut and stripped.

According to the senior technicians, poor contact might have been the cause of the problem. They even informed me that the cabling outside the house was also checked to ensure that the problem did not reside elsewhere.

However, none of the attempts solved the problem and we continued to power cycle the mio box on our own whenever mio Voice exhibited the same problem.

Due to the inconvenience that we have experienced for the past year, I have decided to terminate mio Plan and switch back to a fixed line.

Upon enquiry, I was told that I would have to pay a penalty fee for prematurely terminating the two-year mio Plan contract.

I was also told I would need to pay for the additional cost of subscribing to a new fixed line even though I can no longer use mio Voice.

Could the IDA, Consumers Association, Department of Fair Trading or relevant bodies please advise me regarding the Consumer Acts and what my rights are as a consumer?

If I am paying for a service that I have failed to receive in full, do I then have the right to terminate a contract prematurely without penalty?

What compensation or recourse would I be entitled to?

Fiscal situation ‘untenable’: Obama

WASHINGTON

The US budget deficit is forecast to hit a record US$1.47 trillion ($1.9 trillion) in the fiscal year that ended on Sept 30 and US$1.42 trillion for fiscal year 2011, according to the White House Office of Management and Budget.

Mr Obama said that emergency government spending measures he took to support growth and hiring, had temporarily added to the funding gap, but the deficit had to be tackled.

“I realise that we are facing an untenable fiscal situation,” he told a meeting of his Economic Recovery Advisory Board.

The fate of Bush-era tax cuts has become an issue as campaigning for the Nov 2 mid-term Congressional elections enters its last four weeks. Mr Obama and most Democratic leaders favour letting the cuts, passed in 2001 and 2003, lapse for the rich, but continue for everyone else.

Republicans suggest that could wreck the fragile economic recovery and want all the cuts extended.

At a town hall meeting in Providence Rhode Island, on Monday, US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke weighed in on the topic, saying the world’s largest economy could be hurt if Congress and the White House fail to curb huge federal budget deficits in the coming years.

Exploding budget deficits can lead to higher interest rates for people buying homes and cars and for businesses buying equipment or expanding operations. That could crimp Americans’ spending and slow economic growth, he warned.

However, the government should not raise taxes or slash spending for the time being because the recovery is still too fragile, he said.

Mr Bernanke added that the economy could be helped by another round of asset purchases by the central bank, reinforcing expectations that the Fed would likely take such action at its next meeting on Nov 2 and Nov 3. — The United States is facing an “untenable fiscal situation” and will have to get serious about tackling its federal deficit, President Barack Obama warned on Monday.AGENCIES

MMC leads bid for state-owned UEM

KUALA LUMPUR

MMC, a company with businesses in the power and construction sectors and controlled by Malaysian billionaire Syed Mokhtar Albukhary, did not provide financial details of the bid or name its consortium partners in a statement to the stock exchange.

But analysts estimate the acquisition of UEM, a wholly-owned unit of government investment arm Khazanah Nasional, could cost about RM15 billion to RM16 billion ($6.3 billion to $6.7billion).

Control of key assets held by UEM would cement MMC’s strong presence in Johor.

MMC currently owns two key sea ports, an airport, and a power plant in Johor, as well as a concession to supply 70 per cent of the state’s water needs.— Malaysian conglomerate MMC Corp is leading a consortium that has submitted a preliminary bid to buy state-owned diversified UEM Group from the government.

BOJ drops interest to zero

As strong yen hits outlook, bank sets up $79b fund to fight deflation

TOKYO

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) also said it would establish a ¥5 trillion ($79 billion) fund to buy Japanese government bonds, commercial paper and other asset-backed securities, stealing a march on the United States Federal Reserve in providing a fresh dose of economic stimulus. The BOJ also retained its soft loan facility worth ¥30 trillion for banks.

The yen weakened to almost 84 against the US dollar in a knee-jerk reaction to the BOJ news, but later rebounded to 83.40 on short-covering, slightly stronger than before the announcement.

Stock market sentiment was more positive, with the benchmark Nikkei 225 index jumping 1.5 per cent to close at 9,518.76 after having spent much of the day in the red.

For months, the central bank had eschewed government calls for more decisive action. But as concerns heightened about weakening growth in the Japanese economy — the world’s third-largest, after the US and China — the BOJ carried out what its governor Masaaki Shirakawa described as “comprehensive monetary easing”.— In a surprise move, Japan’s central bank yesterday lowered its benchmark overnight rate target to a range of 0 per cent to 0.1 per cent, a small absolute change from its previous target of 0.1 per cent but a large symbolic slide into an age of zero interest rates.
