Stocks: Greece threatens to derail the rally

@CNNMoneyMarkets February 12, 2012: 8:10 AM ET

Dow  closed   in the red, lower to 12,801.20    -89.23  points or  -0.69%

(CNNMoney) - After a wk dominated by hopes and fears  on Greece, investors will continue to follow the plight of the nation at the center of Europe's debt crisis as it enters another crucial week. Investors will have a full slate of data on U.S. economy to sift through next wk, vie with jitters about a default by debt-stricken Greece.

Stocks sank Friday after euro zone finance ministers postponed a decision on additional bailout funds for Greece, saying the govt's latest austerity program does not go far enough.

The ministers set out three additional conditions for Greece before they will sign off on a 2nd bailout worth €130 billion. Assuming Greece meets the new demands, the ministers could approve the program when they meet Wednesday.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/02/12/us-germany-greece-idUSTRE81B05N20120212

(Reuters) - Greek promises on austerity measures are no longer good enough b'cos so many vows hav been broken and the country that has been a " bottomless pit" has to dramatically change its ways, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said.

" The promises from Greece aren't enough for us anymore," Schaeuble said. " With a new austerity programme they are going to first have to implement parts of the old programme and save."

" But it's important to say that it cannot be a bottomless pit. Greeks have to finally close that pit. And then we can put something in there. At least people are now starting to realize it won't work with a bottomless pit."

Schaeuble said " one way or another" Greek needed to do its homework on improving its competitiveness and hinted it might have to leave the euro zone to do that -- whether that happens in conjunction with a new rescue programme or by another route...When asked if that meant Greece would leave...

" That is all in the hands of the Greeks themselves. But even in the event (Greece leaves the euro zone), which almost no one assumes will happen, they will still remain part of Europe."

" We're happy to help but we shouldn't give others the feeling that they don't have work hard themselves. Every country is responsible for itself."

He said that the rescue efforts for Greece are turning out to be more difficult than efforts associated with German reunification in 1990. There is a need for change, and change dramatically, said Schaeuble, who was a key government architect of German reunification.

" Our goal is to help give Greece a future by making it fit and competitive so that the people there have their chances," he said. " But the path is going to be difficult."

In a hard-hitting interview with the Welt am Sonntag newspaper,. Greece whether the country can stay in the euro zone as part of its efforts to restore its competitiveness.

Schaeuble said Germany, the euro zone's paymaster, wants to prevent that.  In German opinion polls,  it  show a majority of Germans are willing to help Greece.

" It won't solve the problem, but it will help," Samaras told his party's lawmakers in Athens, in comments televised live on state-run NET TV. ‘'It distances us from bankruptcy, looting, the chaos that would follow.''

He said it was self-evident that party discipline would be imposed during the vote on a second financing package. " I'm sure you will all do your duty by your country."

Antonis Samaras, the leader of New Democracy, the second-biggest party, said.
