To the athletes, it’s a slap in the face

MUCH as no one wants to see Ang Peng Siong punished, some form of reprimand is necessary. By not doing anything, the sports authorities will be setting a poor precedent.
If Ang had left for the venue one hour before the deadline for the submission of entries, taking into account the possibility of traffic delays en route, nobody would blame him. But he did not; instead he left for the venue 15 minutes before the closing time for entries. [WHAT was he doing at that crucial tIme ? ? ? ?]
His said it was normal for the event organiser to give a grace period [perpectual late comer ? ? ? ?] after the deadline. But this just shows a lack of respect for the rules and the importance of meeting deadlines.
At the very least, he could have sent in the entry by fax, informing the officials by phone that he would be there in person as soon as he could.
Ang’s error belittled the immense sacrifice put in by the swimmers and their parents — something I, the mother of a former national athlete, am familiar with.

Now, the swimmers have to wait for another four years before they get a shot at participating in a final at a Commonwealth Games.

Ang should be punished

So what if a medal wasn’t likely?

I READ with concern the report, “It’s a minor mistake and Ang should not be punished, says swim chief” (Oct 11).

Whether it is major or minor, a mistake is a mistake, and it is paramount that one should learn from it and ensure that it is not repeated.

While coach Ang Peng Siong (picture) did the right thing by apologising for the slip-up, it irks me to read Singapore Swimming Association president Jeffrey Leow’s remark that the mistake was trivial as our swimmers were not expected to win medals.

Is he sending the message that our sportsmen should not try to excel in competitions in which they have hardly a chance to win?

# ALL teams which Hardly Have a Chance to Win must nOt be sent for any Overseas Games ? #

The 4x200m freestyle relay team lost the chance to gain the rare experience of competing in the final of an international event.

In sports, participation and challenging oneself are more important than winning medals.

Time and again, we have been reminded of the importance of perseverance and a never-say-die attitude.

I trust that our sports associations will emphasise the importance of athletes giving their best, no matter the odds.

But the Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) said yesterday Ang was unlikely to face any punishment for the error, with SSA president Jeffrey Leow saying reaction to the incident had been “totally overboard”.

“It’s not only the coach’s error, but it’s actually SSA’s error as well because we failed to give the coach enough support,” Leow told MediaCorp at the Team Singapore welcome reception for the swimmers and gymnasts at Changi Airport yesterday.

“In terms of mistakes, this is trivial. I believe the Americans had done the same in the ’70s in one of the Olympics and that was a serious situation where they lost medals.

“In our case, our swimmers were not expected to win medals and were looking for seventh place. It’s unfortunate that they weren’t able to swim in the final, but it was not a major error.”

WHY go there in the FIRST PLACE if it is not to GAIN competition experience ?

THEN, WHY even bother to WASTE MONEY to send a TEAM ?

At the 1972 Munich Olympics, the top two US sprinters and medal favourites in the 100m, Rey Robinson and Eddie Hart, missed the final after being given the wrong starting time.

Leow said that the SSA would ensure the mistake is not repeated at other major games, with a full team of six coaches and other support staff to travel to next month’s Asian Games in Guangzhou.

The men’s 4x200 relay team comprising Teo Zhen Ren, Jeremy Kevin Mathews, Matthias Ng and Arren Quek had qualified seventh fastest (7 min 47.19 sec). But Ang had missed the 3pm deadline for submitting the start list for the final as he was stuck in Delhi’s notorious traffic jam.

But it was all water under the bridge for the young swimmers, who clocked 19 personal bests at the Dr SPM Aquatics Complex in New Delhi.

Sixteen-year-old Arren said: “At first we were shocked and a little disappointed but I won’t blame Uncle Siong (Ang). As a team, we should have reminded him to go earlier as well. It was an honest mistake, we can forgive and forget.”

Approximately 50 friends, family and supporters were at Changi Airport to welcome the returning swimmers and gymnasts.— Swimming head coach Ang Peng Siong has been under fire for his slip up at the Commonwealth Games, which led to the Singapore men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team’s disqualification from the final last Wednesday.

Local tycoon blows $100m at the tables

While significant, this is a fraction of his estimated net worth. But he’s not the only high-roller to discover that “the house always wins”.

Around the same time, sources said, another tycoon from the timber-rich East Malaysian state of Sabah lost $50 million here.

“These guys can well afford the losses,” said one high-roller who is a regular at Singapore’s two casinos — at Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands.

However, while gamblers losing $10 million to $20 million over a few sessions in the rooms reserved for high-rollers are no longer a rare breed, the source said that whispers of these two businessmen parting with a total of $150 million have raised more than a few eyebrows, even among the regulars.

News of these two multimillion-dollar casino losers comes amid an update that local businessman Henry Quek, who lost $26 million during a three-day gambling spree, is said to have settled his debts.

Mr Quek, the managing director of Far Ocean Sea Products, a seafood processing and trading company operating out of Fishery Port Road in Jurong, had initially considered legal action against Resorts World Sentosa for granting him credit too easily.

It is understood that the casino had shaved $6 million off his debt initially and another $3 million after the media reports about the case.

Mr Quek is said to have settled the rest of the outstanding debt. Unlike Mr Quek, the two latest multi-million-dollar losers, who are believed to have put their money at gaming tables of both Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands, are said to have absorbed their losses without any complaints.

Against the backdrop of such mega-losses by individual high-rollers, analysts say it is not surprising Mr Sheldon Adelson, chairman of Las Vegas Sands, parent of Marina Bay Sands, predicted that Singapore could, in a few years, overtake Las Vegas as the world’s second-largest gaming centre behind Macau.— Sources have told Today that a local businessman, who appeared on the latest Forbes list of Singapore’s 40 richest people, recently lost a total of $100 million at the two casinos here.
