Buffett on housing: Was " dead wrong," but still believes

Buffett says he still believes a real estate recovery is on the horizon. Yet, the Oracle of Omaha admits that on housing his crystal ball has been cloudy.

Last year, Buffett said the real estate market would recover in 2011 or early 2012. While home sales have risen recently, it would be a stretch to call the past year a recovery, and Buffett doesn't try. " I was dead wrong."

Monday: Latest news...U.S. Stock Futures Drop as G-20 Snubs Europe

German Chancellor Angela Merkel
German Chancellor Angela Merkel
The world's leading economies in the G20 piled pressure on Berlin at the weekend to drop opposition to a bigger European bailout fund, telling Euro must put up extra money if it wanted more help from other countries.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso added his voice on Monday, saying he expected a decision on strengthening the euro zone's financial firewall during March, although not yet at an EU summit on Thursday and Friday.

But Merkel, whose country provides the lion's share of the emergency funds, first faces a tough vote in the Bundestag (lower house), which may force her to rely on the opposition to pass a 130-billion-euro ($175 billion) rescue program for Greece, its second since 2010.

" Billions for Greece — Stop!" Germany's best-selling newspaper Bild screamed across its front page.

" Don't go any further along this crazy path," it said, quoting leading economists who argue Greece would do better to default on its huge pile of sovereign debt and temporarily leaving the single currency.

Merkel will face a determined band of rebels from her own coalition when she opens the debate in the Bundestag at 3 p.m. (1400 GMT). The vote will take place a few hours later. Germany's parliament was almost certain to endorsed a  2nd Greek bailout, but Chancellor Angela Merkel was torn between domestic pressure to stop throwing good money after bad and global calls to boost Europe's crisis defenses.

Bigger Euro fund is a condition for major non-European economies before they lend more money to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)  to provide an even bigger wall of cash to fight the crisis that has already claimed three euro debtor countries and now threatens the much bigger economies of Italy and Spain.

" I would not bet on a positive outcome by the end of the March 1-2 summit," one euro zone official said. " German opposition to a deal is still very strong."

Euro zone leaders are set to review the 500 billion euro ($675 billion) limit on the joint lending capacity of their temporary and permanent bailout funds, known by their acronyms EFSF and ESM, at the March 1-2 summit.

Why majority holders keep selling off their share in the open market at lower ?

KL tells Lynas to send back waste back waste.

Four govt ministries involved in  granting the temporary operating licence issued a joint statement,  asking miner for letter of undertaking ahead of big protest in five cities.

Any residue generated by its plant to be send back to it,  " its original source" namely the company's Mount Weld mine in Perth, Western Australia.

According to Lynas, the AELB will meet on January 30 to decide on whether to issue a pre-operating licence which will be followed by a full licence within two years if the plant meets safety requirements outlined in its application. Lynas is anticipating a windfall of RM8 billion a year from 2013 onwards.

Meantime, disposing of radioactive waste on an uninhabited island would be the most expensive option for Lynas Corp if the Australian miner’s plans to reprocess residue from its RM2.5 billion rare earth plant in Kuantan fails.

Rokkasho would consume 80% of Japan's spent fuel, assuming Tokyo decides to return to pre-disaster levels of nuclear power generation.

" Even if the Rokkasho plant becomes operational, we cannot help but meet the deadline (for storage space to run out) in 15 to 20 yrs, just a little longer than about 10 yrs without it," said Hideyuki Ban, co-director of the Citizens' Nuclear Information Center and also a member of a govt panel studying the nuclear fuel cycle.

But the waste problem is now so acute that experts say the facility will only buy Japan an additional five to 10 years before it has to implement more lasting but politically sensitive solutions, such as permanent burial.

If it fails to find a solution to its waste-fuel problem, the entire nuclear power industry could one day grind to a halt. " We think there is an 80 to 90 percent chance of the plant being a failure."
