wow, even investment banker name is out..... know they have a banker, the investment strategies cannot be too bad.

so do not worry lah, yes doing business in sri lanka was bad until the tamil tigers were killed..... they are experiencing hunger to grow..... more people are putting money for manufacturing and investment in this formerly not so safe country...... casino is the first but since they invested in bank first then gaining entry into casino...... make me think they are planning well...... if you simply invest in casino, i am sure you have many areas to cover it ?

it is about timing....  I am sure it should cover their ass well when sri lanka bank is the backing.... and from bank transfer the profit like investing in other areas to stablised the economic situation........

but not sure if you have seen the RWS news, lots of indian are waiting to enter the casino......  and this country wealthy individuals are not any lesser than singaporean rich man......  so those VIP tables should be very profitable too ?

Hi Tiancai007,

Genting Stock sold down from $1.28 to 0.85 when Genting issued a mandatory 450million share convitible bond to be converted to share at the price of 0.95cents.

After 1Q2010 report, showing a net income of about $110million, investor dump shares but after reading the financial result, Genting Actually made an income of about $300million + after deduction "Sales Cost". This is higher than expected. When Genting won the 2nd Casino, they worked out that the yearly income should be about $1billion which will pay back the cost of the Integrated Resorts in 5 years. After 1Q the yearly income worked out to be about $1.2billion per year. Most Analyse rated the shares up. The shares went up and held at about $1.22 to $1.29.

After 2Q2010 report, the share price went up to to date of $2.27.

3Q2010 report, Income is at $311 million, which yearly income still target at $1.2billion higher than initially expected, this means if the trend continue, the repayment for the IR should be less than 5 years.

MINIMUM WAGE

Dilemma of a two-track economy

PROFESSOR Tommy Koh has proposed that we have a rational discussion on the pros and cons of a minimum wage in Singapore ('Don't knock minimum wage yet'; Thursday).

His arguments have largely been based on issues of social equity. I'd like to offer another view.

The argument against a minimum wage, on the grounds that our labour market pricing mechanism should be determined solely by the market, does not hold water in Singapore.

There is already state intervention in the pricing mechanism, whether overt or indirect, to achieve policy objectives.

The levy on foreign workers is a direct mechanism; the National Wages Council's recommendations is an indirect example.

Even adjustments to the Central Provident Fund during times of economic recession - to reduce labour costs to employers - are an intervention in the market.

In fact, the Government has overtly used labour pricing to achieve macro-economic objectives, most notably in the 1980s, when wages were jacked up artificially to help propel the economy out of low-cost, low value-added industries and towards a knowledge-intensive economy.

Singapore is arguably facing the same 'low-cost labour trap' again.

We have a dichotomised economy - a low-cost, low-skills service sector ranging from hospitality and retail to the construction industry versus a high- skilled, knowledge-based economy dominated by life sciences, information technology and creative industries.

The former is dominated by foreign workers and the Government's dilemma is in trying to reduce the foreign worker content as well as increasing the skills content, and in so doing, attracting more Singaporeans to this sector.

One way to do so is to introduce a minimum wage.

No doubt, critics can argue that this is using too broad an instrument to achieve specific policy goals which can be achieved by other means. There is also the not insignificant problem of how to determine what should be the minimum wage, and how to adjust it over time so that it does not end up distorting a free labour market in a major way.

I am not convinced of the arguments for or against a minimum wage. But I agree with Prof Koh that a thinking society should thoughtfully debate these and other issues of long-term importance to our society.

SPORTS SCHOOL FOOD POISONING

Food prepared in school, not at caterer's HQ

I WISH to highlight a few points regarding Wednesday's article ('School caterer has history of poor hygiene').

ISS Catering Services, which catered food for the Singapore Sports School, is a professional and established full-service caterer. Additionally, it is HACCP-certified. HACCP, or Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point, is a systematic, documented and auditable approach to food safety management.

It is the industry's chosen mechanism for assessing, implementing and managing food safety controls.

In order to be certified, ISS must adhere to a robust and disciplined implementation of food safety standards and practices.

Besides catering to the mass market, ISS has a track record of catering for high-profile events whose guests have included heads of state and foreign dignitaries.

To have catered to such events attests to the caterer's capability and ability to conform to high standards of hygiene and service.

The food served at the Singapore Sports School was prepared on the school's premises, not at the company's central kitchen where operations have been running normally.

It must also be noted that despite adopting stringent measures to ensure food safety, there are invariably factors that are beyond the reasonable control of a caterer.

Most of us take the business of catering for granted, but the service provided is so essential to our way of life.

The public should be aware that ISS has a track record of serving hundreds of thousands of meals without any incident over the years.

SPORTS SCHOOL FOOD POISONING

Principal: NEA rated caterer 'A' for past 2 years

OUR school awarded ISS Catering Services the tender to prepare and serve cooked meals on our premises from January 2008 to next month. ('Mr Yap Swee Hoo, 'The sports school should have been more careful'; Thursday). The tender required the caterer to meet the essential requirement of food safety and quality assurance, including cleanliness and proper functioning of all kitchen equipment in their daily operations. The caterer had obtained a Grade A for hygiene standards from the National Environment Agency (NEA) during the past two years.

As part of standard operating procedure, we informed the Ministry of Health and NEA immediately about food-related illnesses. Each time, we instructed the caterer to clean the kitchen and dining hall thoroughly, and carry out NEA's recommendations. The kitchen was reopened only after getting NEA's approval.

In the first incident in January last year, the ministry and NEA could not pinpoint a specific causative agent. We took additional precautions to sanitise living areas of our student-athletes in the boarding facility to reduce a possible cause of infection that could have arisen from other sources.

When the incident recurred two months later, we instructed the caterer to ban a staff member of the caterer immediately after we were told that the worker was infected with salmonella.

In the latest incident, we closed the kitchen immediately and reopened it with NEA's approval. As a precaution, we stopped kitchen operations and instructed the caterer to supply individually packed meals from its central kitchen until next Monday, when our school will break for the year-end school holidays.

The NEA informed our school on Thursday that it had suspended the caterer's operations in our kitchen immediately, a decision that will not affect our daily operations as we had already provided for the meals to be supplied from the caterer's central kitchen.

Another view

'Give serious thought in the interest of an inclusive society where the income gap is not left entirely to market forces.'

MR K. KESAVAPANY: 'Professor Tommy Koh has advanced several cogent reasons why Singapore should not dismiss the option of having a minimum wage ('Don't knock minimum wage yet'; Thursday). The Government should give serious thought to the introduction of a minimum wage in the interest of an inclusive society where the income gap is not left entirely to market forces.'
