HAVE YOUR SAY: Design of water polo team trunks 'inappropriate'
MICA disapproves of local water polo boys wearing trunks that bear elements of the Singapore flag
The Singapore water polo team at the Asian Games
The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts said the Singapore water polo team did not seek its advice when they sported swimming trunks bearing elements of the Singapore flag.
It said their design is inappropriate, as elements of the flag must be treated with dignity.
The water polo team was wearing trunks which feature the crescent moon and stars from the Singapore flag at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
MICA said it has spoken with the Singapore Sports Council and was informed the team is apologetic and had meant no disrespect.
The Ministry understands that under competition rules, the team may have difficulty switching to another set of trunks for their match on Thursday.
Under the Singapore Arms and Flag and National Anthem Act, no person shall use the flag or any image thereof as or as part of any costume or attire unless approval is given by the Minister and there is no "no disrespect" for the flag.
Those found guilty of doing so face a S$1,000 fine.
Just fIne bUt stlll dare nOt SACK the TEAM ? ? ? ?

Are teachers screened too?
Letter from Gurmit Singh Kullar
While it is understandable a fugitive would turn to his family for refuge, it is positively shocking that Mas Selamat received the most help from a trainee teacher. This revelation has perhaps shaken our trust in those who are expected to inculcate positive values of nation-building and identity in our children.
Subversive ideologies can be sown in the young, who would later have no qualms about participating in terrorist activities.
Nur Aini Asmom could have had ample opportunity to express her views to the young and impressionable. It is now crucial that the authorities ascertain her motivations and figure out why she would help someone determined to ruin this country.
But is she just one bad apple?
Nur Aini’s involvement also raises questions about how teachers are screened before being allowed into the profession.
How stringent are the background checks, and is there a continual assessment of the psychological well-being of our teachers?
Are there checks to ensure teachers are themselves not straying?

The real issue here ...
Letter from Quek Soo Beng
The revelations about Mas Selamat’s escape evoke more distress and disbelief than disappointmentwrong but not totally unexpected.. What his relatives did was
The crime merely affirms that “blood is thicker than water”, a fact which has nothing to do with race or religion. Linking these two issues only distracts from the real issues — I am sure most Singaporeans, of all races and religions, understand this to be a matter of national security, period.
I read with disbelief that the negligence leading to Mas Selamat’s escape from detention was apparently followed by the failure to take urgent appropriate action that could have resulted in his early recapture.
When the extensive field search failed to yield results on the first day, the immediate and most fundamental move must be to second-guess where he would go to seek refuge and help. This must surely include surveillance of the likely places and the robust interrogation of suspected allies.
Mas Selamat might have hundreds of likely contacts, but a lesser number of probable ones. Heading the priority list must surely be those with Jemaah Islamiyah links and close family members with compelling reasons to help him.
Lack of manpower to do the needful to re-capture the country’s most dangerous enemy is not an acceptable excuse.
Even if surveillance is difficult, keeping an eye on an HDB flat is not exactly rocket science — access is limited to one front door.
Given that the full story behind Mas Selamat’s escape is still to be ascertained, how can the authorities be sure family members were not part of his JI support network, and that the wrong-doers are truly repentant?
Will the jail terms of between three and 18 months send a dangerous message to terrorists at large?
Singapore looks to the authorities to act with full disclosure as the dust settles further, and to demonstrate that our national security and crisis management are in competent and accountable hands.

‘Several lapses’ at Thomson Fertility Centre
SINGAPORE
These findings were released by Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan in Parliament yesterday after investigations were launched into Thomson Medical Centre whose fertility centre used the wrong sperm for a couple undergoing invitro fertilisation (IVF).
Mr Khaw said, at the time of the incident, the embryologist had been processing semen specimens from two individuals at the same time. The pipette used for transferring specimens was reused twice instead of being discarded after a single use as is the recommended practice, thus “unnecessarily raising the risk of human error”.
The centre also did not have another person to check that the specimens were transferred correctly at every critical stage, as is the recommended procedure.
“These lapses in procedure contributed to the occurrence of a human error and both led to the IVF mix-up in this case,” said Mr Khaw.
In response to Member of Parliament Lam Pin Min’s query on the other nine IVF centres, Mr Khaw said two private centres were found to be in non-compliance of some procedures but have since fully corrected these.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) in a statement yesterday said that the two centres had lapsed in not having a second person to counter-check during the IVF procedure.
Operations at Thomson Fertility Centre have since been suspended by MOH. — In addition to handling two assisted-reproduction processes specimens at a single time, other lapses at the Thomson Fertility Centre included using the same lab instrument, a pipette, twice and not having a second person to counter-check at every critical step of the procedure.Ng Jing Yng

Can't compare Vietnam war days with now...
In the 70's the US was the economic king of the world...
But even today, they are still resorting to the old trick of printing more money
to 'ease' the bad situation after the unprecedented sub-prime meltdown we saw.
Whether it will work one more time or not, only time can tell...

The F.A. ACID TEST
S$2.70
bsiong ( Date: 23-Nov-2010 16:31) Posted:
Genting Singapore : Game on. | | | Since hitting a 52 week high of S$2.35 on 9 November 2010, Genting Singapore has fallen 15% to S$1.99. Genting currently trades at 17.9x CY12 P/E and 3.9x P/BV. | | | In our view, Genting Singapore trades at an attractive valuation, fundamentally backed by strong growth drivers going forward. We believe Genting Singapore offers great upside potential going forward. | | | 3Q10 results recap. 9M10 core earnings came in above expectations and a seasonally strong year-end could surprise analysts on the upside. We see medium-term catalysts from speedier ramp-up of their RWS operations, licensing of junkets as well as sustained market leadership. | | | RWS operations ramp-up. 3Q10 table count grew 24% qoq from 380 in 2Q10 to 470 in 3Q10. We were positively surprised as we were expecting a gradual operation ramp-up and existing count is already above management’s guidance of 450 tables by year end. In view of strong demand trend, management is expecting the average table count to settle at 500 by year-end. | | | Receivables could improve with introduction of junkets. Though investors might be concerned about seemingly high trade receivables, (20% of revenue), management reiterated its confidence in balancing revenue with credit extension. Although we acknowledge that this figure is high compared its Macau and Malaysia peers, we believe the introduction of junkets should lighten the burden on Genting Singapore ’s balance sheet going forward. | | | Recommendation: In spite of the recent hiccups on the macroeconomic front, we believe continued economic growth in Asia should drive gaming demand growth for Genting Singapore . We believe Genting Singapore will be able to benefit from favourable industry factors going forward. We currently have an Outperformrecommendation with target price of S$2.70. |
