I only can say.... Opposition is weak because they do not have the chances to grow and prove themselves... They must stand at least 20% of seats in Paliament  to be effective and also to make the ruling party come out of their comfort  chair and think more about the people.... What you acheive in the past, does not necesary mean you can still achieve in the present... Gd luck!

GE: SDA says well prepared for General Election

GE: SDA says well prepared for General Election

GE: SDA says well prepared for General Election

Desmond Lim, Singapore Democratic Alliance

SINGAPORE : The Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) said the May 7 election date did not come as a surprise.

Its party secretary—general, Desmond Lim, said the party is well prepared and that logistics are all done.

He said what is important now is for the party to condition the candidates mentally for the stresses of the hustings.

On whether there are enough days for campaigning, he said there is more than sufficient time.

Mr Lim said the party has not only prepared itself for this election, but has already begun preparations for the one in 2016.

He said he will be gathering potential candidates for a closed door meeting on Tuesday night.

" I would say that any party that are interested in contesting or are serious in contesting, immediately after last election, they should consistently work on the ground, and stay connected with the locals," said Mr Lim.

He plans to intensify house—to—house visits.

" We will intensify the visiting of the households and we will let the residents know about our plans and what we are standing for — that is important. And hopefully, they will align with us and give us the mandate to represent them in the Parliament," he said.

The party will be fielding between seven and nine candidates in this election.

They will contest in the Single Member Constituencies of Punggol East, Radin Mas and Sengkang West and the Pasir Ris—Punggol GRC.

But the line—up of candidates or the places the party will contest may still change come Nomination Day.

Commenting on election deposit of S$16,000, Mr Lim said there is some pressure in coming up with the money.

" There is little bit (of pressure), but we are able to cope with it. We are not a party with no funding, we still have so called adequate funds to field a reasonable number of candidates for the election campaign," he said.

GE: Former Reform Party vice—chairman may rejoin party

GE: Former Reform Party vice—chairman may rejoin party

Alec Tok

SINGAPORE : Former Reform Party (RP) vice—chairman and member of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) Alec Tok has said he is considering rejoining the party.

He said he received a call from an RP member asking him to return.

Secretary—general Kenneth Jeyaretnam confirmed this with Channel NewsAsia, adding that " some Reform Party members are keen that he returns" .

Mr Tok had previously resigned as he disagreed with certain clauses in the party’s protocol for CEC members.

The 46 year old said he was told on Tuesday afternoon that the protocol would be " done away with" .

Mr Tok said for him, it was a matter of principle that no one is required to sign the protocol. He did not want to be the only one exempted from signing it.

Mr Jeyaretnam, however, said the protocol will not be terminated, but " certain clauses may be negotiable" .

Mr Jeyaretnam said Mr Tok resigned because the party could not guarantee that he could stand in the single seat of Radin Mas — something Mr Tok was keen on.

The New York—based theatre director was active in Radin Mas and had told Channel NewsAsia on Monday that he was still keen to contest there either as an independent candidate or under the banner of another opposition party.

Mr Jeyaretnam said if Mr Tok rejoined, he would have to sign the party’s candidate pledge as well as abide by its collective decisions. And he could not confirm where Mr Tok would stand if he rejoined the party.

Mr Jeyaretnam also said he had called the former chairman of the Reform Party, Mr Ng Teck Siong, to rejoin the party.

There is no confirmation whether Mr Ng will do so. He is currently the chairman of The Socialist Front, which recently announced it was pulling out of the General Election.

Mr Jeyaretnam said Mr Ng was always keen to take part in the elections.

DPM Wong urges Singaporeans abroad to vote
Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng said that every vote counts and it matters regardless of where Singaporeans cast their vote. -- ST PHOTO: DESMOND WEE

SHANGHAI - EVERY vote counts and it matters regardless of where Singaporeans cast their vote, said Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng on Saturday, as he tried to allay concerns that overseas ballots had little impact.

Some people had noted that ballots cast abroad at the 2006 General Elections were added up only after those in Singapore had been counted and suggested that overseas Singaporeans be allowed to vote earlier.

Speaking at a carnival in Shanghai for China-based Singaporeans, Mr Wong said that this would be difficult given the different time zones, as the Government would like all Singaporeans to vote at the same time.

He explained that when the vote count in Singapore shows a clear win for a certain candidate, and if the number of overseas ballots for that particular ward would not affect the result, the candidate will be declared the winner.

But the votes from abroad would still be added up and included in the final count, he assured. 'Their votes are counted. It's important, every vote counts,' he told reporters at the Singapore Day carnival at Shanghai's Century Park.

Mr Wong urged Singaporeans abroad to register to have a say in the elections, pointing out that there was still time to do so before the date of polling day is announced.

As of end March, nearly 2,800 outside Singapore have registered to vote at one of nine overseas polling stations in cities including Beijing and Shanghai.

About 5,500 people attended the Singapore Day gathering, the fourth such event to encourage those who are away from Singapore, to keep up their ties with home.

GE: SPP " on track" and going " full steam" ahead to contest election

Singapore People's Party

SINGAPORE: The Singapore People’s Party said it is " on track" and going " full steam" ahead to contest in the upcoming General Election.

It was announced on Tuesday that Singapore will go to the polls on May 7, with Nomination Day on April 27.

SPP’s new candidate, Benjamin Pwee, said: " The timeline that has been announced, with Nomination (Day) and Polling Day, is exactly as what we expected and it has not taken us by surprise. And we are very pleased that our internal timing and timeline fits exactly with what has been announced."

Mr Pwee added that the party is all set to campaign with banners and posters, as well as its " custom lorries" .

Its electoral strategy was also firmed up at an internal meeting last week and another meeting will be held on Wednesday to finalise logistical and operational issues.

On the election deposit of S$16,000 for each candidate, Mr Pwee said his party has no problem with the sum.

" We’ve been doing our internal budgeting and putting up our finances for the deposit. So it’s not an issue at all."

Mr Pwee said the party is in the midst of scheduling dates for the rallies and will announce that soon. He added there will be no changes to the constituencies his party would be contesting in.

SPP will field a five—man team in Bishan—Toa Payoh GRC.

They comprise party secretary—general Chiam See Tong, assistant secretary—general Wilfred Leung, Mohamad Hamim Aliyas, Jimmy Lee and Mr Pwee.

Meanwhile, SPP chairman Sin Kek Tong will contest in the newly carved out Hong Kah North SMC. Lina Chiam, the second vice—chairwoman of the party, will contest in Potong Pasir SMC.

GE: DPM Wong says his team worked hard even without opposition contesting

GE: DPM Wong says his team worked hard even without opposition contesting

GE: DPM Wong says his team worked hard even without opposition contesting

Wong Kan Seng

SINGAPORE : Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng said his team continued to work very hard even though his constituency at Bishan—Toa Payoh GRC has not been contested by the opposition for many years.

Mr Wong was speaking on the sidelines of his Meet—the—People session at his ward in Bishan East.

He said the team did not take anything for granted and continued to work hard for the residents.

Mr Wong added that he has been preparing for the upcoming General Election (GE) since the last one.

He said his team has completed 250 projects worth more than S$400 million since the last GE.

Mr Wong also said his GRC team welcomes contest from the Singapore People’s Party (SPP).

SPP’s secretary—general Chiam See Tong is leading a team to contest in the GRC.

This would be the constituency’s first contest since it was formed 14 years ago.

Mr Wong said: " It’s good that we have a contest. Then voters will decide who has a better team. And we have been working hard all these years we didn’t just get a team ready just before election or only walked the ground not long before today.

" So whether they come or not, of course I hope that they will turn up and contest on that day. And we will put up a good fight, but we will focus on our plan, focus on actions we’re going to take, and focus on what to do for our residents."

Mr Wong said there has been tremendous improvement in the environment and the spaces where his residents live, through programmes like the Lift Upgrading Programme(LUP), the Main Upgrading Programme (MUP), the Home Improvement Programme (HIP), and the state renewal programme.

He added that residents in Bishan—Toa Payoh have expressed appreciation for what his team has done when he meets them, whether during house visits, at the markets, or at constituency events.
