Bt Batok tragedy: Hubby is A*Star researcher

By Fann Sim | SingaporeScene  –  Fri, Apr 15, 2011 6:53 PM SGT

A mother and daughter were found dead in Bukit Batok on Friday. (Yahoo!)

The husband of the woman and daughter who fell to their deaths in Bukit Batok is a researcher working at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star).

Dr Bao Xioaming, originally from Shanghai but now a Singaporean, has worked for over seven years at the Agency's Institute for Incomm Research, reported The Sunday Times. He received his doctorate from the prestigious Jiaotong University in Shanghai.

Last Friday morning, his wife, 46-year-old Ho Xue Ping, and daughter Bao Pei Qin, 9, fell from their home on the 12th floor at Bukit Batok Street 24, Block 290B.

The bodies were discovered by a maid who was on her way out. Both were pronounced dead by paramedics at around 7:55am. The mother was wearing a white blouse and shorts, while her daughter was in pink pajamas.

The family was originally from China and moved to Singapore just a few months ago after obtaining Singapore citizenship. They moved into their newly renovated flat at Bukit Batok last December. Neighbours said that the family did not interact much and mostly kept to themselves.

Dr Bao's daughter, Pei Qin was a student at Keming Primary school and was a hardworking girl, said the  school's principal, Kelvin Tay. He added that the school will monitor Pei Qin's classmates and provide counselling.

Late on Friday night, Member of Parliament Hallimah Yacob paid Dr Bao a visit to offer her condolences.

She said, " The husband was, of course, very sad but very composed and calm," said the MP for Jurong GRC.

" This a tragic case and healing will take some time, but I hope for the best for the family," she said, before adding that grassroots leaders are helping Dr Bao with the funeral arrangements.

SINGAPORE

But that has not stopped the Singapore People’s Party (SPP) — led by veteran Opposition leader Chiam See Tong — from revisiting the issue for the coming election.

In its manifesto, the SPP — which is expected to contest Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, where Mr Wong is the PAP’s anchor minister — has asked voters to hold Mr Wong responsible for the incident.

Yesterday, when asked whether the incident would cost him voters. Mr Wong said he would leave it to the voters to decide.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a community event, Mr Wong said: “Of course, the first mistake cannot be obliterated it was there, I owned up to it, as a minister I took responsibility for it — that’s the right thing to do.”

天 意 — In his own words, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng has apologised and accounted for the February 2008 escape of Jemaah Islamiyah leader Mas Selamat Kastari, which had occurred under his watch as Home Affairs Minister.

GST won't be raised for at least another 5 years: Tharman

No need to raise GST as Singapore budget is in a healthy state
by Hasnita A Majid
SINGAPORE - Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has reiterated that the goods and services tax (GST) will not be raised for at least another five years.

Mr Tharman said there is no need to raise the GST as Singapore's budget is in a healthy state.

The GST was last raised from 5 per cent to 7 per cent in 2007.

Mr Tharman was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a community event in Jurong on Saturday.

He said: " As Finance Minister, I have made that very clear in Parliament that at least for the next five years - it does not mean we will raise it in five years' time - but at least for five years, there is absolutely no reason to raise the GST, because this was the whole idea - we strengthen our revenue base in time. In fact, in the good years before the crisis, it came in very handy in the crisis but it is also going to come in handy in the next five years when we build our infrastructure in health, in infrastructure and we increase our support for the poor.

" Basically, the GST and changes to the constitution have provided us a lot addition to our revenue base. Firstly, it has provided us to react very forcefully during the crisis, it wasn't just the draw on the reserves...we were very fortunate that we made the revenue changes in time so that we could react forcefully to help Singapore through the crisis and now post-crisis, it has helped us to build up our infrastructure, education, health, including continuous education and training.

" That was the original motivation for GST, help the poor more and prepare Singaporeans for the future through investment income, two very solid sources of revenue to help us in the years to come."

Mr Tharman also said that his team is taking the Opposition seriously, whether they are well-known or otherwise.

But he said that the People's Action Party (PAP) team has a track record in Jurong, having made many improvements for the elderly, children and low-income families in the last 10 years.

Mr Tharman added that aside from national schemes, Jurong also has its own local schemes that have benefited the residents there, and so residents already know what the PAP can do more and that they can deliver on their promises.
