SDP: SM Goh wrong on ministerial pay
SINGAPORE - Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, Mr Tan Jee Say, 57, said Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, 69, was wrong when he said most of the population were not concerned with ministerial pay.

Mr Tan said many residents had told the SDP candidates during their walkabouts that they were concerned about the high salaries ministers drew.

Mr Tan is part of a four-man team contesting in the Holland-Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency (GRC).

His fellow candidate for the GRC, Ms Michelle Lee, 35, said it was a pity the People's Action Party (PAP) has shot down their economic proposal so quickly instead of examining it more closely.

This was in response to PAP candidate Mr Christopher de Souza, 35, who had commented that the SDP's plan was a " rushed patchwork of ideas" .

Ms Lee was speaking to MediaCorp during her team's walkabout in Ghim Moh this morning.

Mr Tan said he had spent more than a year researching and writing his economic proposal, which was published in February.

I agree.

A co-driver(opposition) is essential, especially when the road gets tougher to navigate. The co-driver is there to slap the driver when he drives off course or when he goes to sleep or drives dangerously.” He added: “But, of course, if the driver is friendly and drives responsibly, we just keep talking to him to keep him awake.

Chiam See Tong called on voters to let the Opposition keep a regular check on the Government, debate national policies and “most importantly, hold the government accountable for you"

Exactly!! The opposition is meant to be a government for the government, a voice, to keep PAP liable/attentive to the CITIZENs needs.

No opposition sitting in parliament, I cannot imagine.... we are already now at their mercy!

Sorry, the tornadoes hit US on Thursday which is our Friday killing and injuring many people.

What I am trying to say is that these are acts of God and beyond our ability to know and control.   If it hits us, and it is not big enough to destroy everything, it is still not the end of things. So likewise Aljunied lost is not whole of PAP lost.   It just makes the debates in parliament more lively and every PAP MPs will be more alert next time and do constructive work for their residents.

MM is just telling the hard truth that PAP could afford a couple of GRCs in opposition hands.   Fighting elections is a serious mater no doubt, but if it has to be lost, try to win back next round if you could.   BG Yeo could still contribute to the country.   We can make use of his expertise on foreign affairs which the oppositions have suggested.

Laulan      ( Date: 03-May-2011 11:07) Posted:

MM said losing Aljunied is not the end of world for the PAP..   PM should take his advice and not be fractious over it.   The actual end of the world can only be due to events beyond our control, i.e. should a meteorite hits us from outer space. Last night the tornado in Alabama destroyed many homes killing more than 340 residents and about 1000 people were injured.   So take it easy, man. We can only pray.

From Yahoo Finance, The STO drops from 1554 (May) to 1360 (Sept), a drop of 12.5%. Election was on 31 Aug 1991. At that the oppositions were also very fierce and they got 4 seats out of 81. Even the cartoon Ling also got elected.

Musical " Man of La Mancha"
    The Impossible Dream Lyrics

    Lyrics by Joe Darion
In this song, Quixote explains his quest and the reasons behind it ... in doing so,
he captures the essence of the play and its philosophical underpinnings.
(For me, it is absolutely magical.)

To dream ... the impossible dream ...
To fight ... the unbeatable foe ...
To bear ... with unbearable sorrow ...
To run ... where the brave dare not go ...
To right ... the unrightable wrong ...
To love ... pure and chaste from afar ...
To try ... when your arms are too weary ...
To reach ... the unreachable star ...

This is my quest, to follow that star ...
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far ...
To fight for the right, without question or pause ...
To be willing to march into Hell, for a Heavenly cause ...

And I know if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest,
That my heart will lie will lie peaceful and calm,
when I'm laid to my rest ...
And the world will be better for this:
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach ... the unreachable star ...

Do you remember GE 1991, asks Sylvia Lim

    Christopher Toh

    and Tanya Fong

    christophertoh@mediacorp.com.sg

That year, she noted, the Opposition took four constituencies — Potong Pasir, Nee Soon Central, Bukit Gombak and Hougang — while the PAP received only 61 per cent of the valid votes.

“(The PAP) later assessed that Singaporeans were very concerned about the cost of living,” Ms Lim told a WP rally in Kallang last night.

“A few months later, then - Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong agreed to form a cost review committee to examine why the people felt the cost of living was too high.”

The committee, she said, looked into the four main areas of concern: Healthcare costs, the price of new Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats, as well as the costs of education and transport.

The committee found that the change in the HDB’s pricing policy had made new flats more expensive and reminded the HDB to focus on affordable housing for the lower- and middle-income groups, Ms Lim said.

That review only happened, she added, because of the “wakeup call” from the 1991 GE.SINGAPORE — Voting Opposition members into Parliament has its benefits, said Workers’ Party (WP) chairman Sylvia Lim, citing the 1991 General Election (GE) as an example.

Re: How safe is H1N1 vaccine?

    http://www.temasekreview.com/2010/01...take-h1n1-jab/

sometimes i wonder if the others r just fools like my shadow.. or old and wise just like me.
    -------

SINGAPORE might have ordered too many doses of the Influenza A (H1N1) vaccines, just as other countries have done in their haste to beat an unknown virus.

Of the 1.3 million doses secured by the Health Ministry (MOH), only 417,250 have been bought by clinics and essential front-line staff so far.

Although this number might increase with the traditional January-to-February flu season prompting more people to go for vaccinations, many doses may still have to be discarded because of their limited shelf life. The two H1N1 vaccines here have an expiry of either 12 or 18 months.

On Tuesday, the MOH told The Straits Times that it might respond to the World Health Organisation's (WHO) request to developed countries to donate 10 per cent of their vaccine purchases to developing nations.

A spokesman said the ministry is sorting out legal details and will do its 'fair share as a responsible global citizen, but the donation will be modest'.

On his blog on Tuesday, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan said matching vaccine supply with demand is a challenging problem faced by flu manufacturers and general practitioners annually.

    ----------

say 800K dose, each at $17 = $13.6 mil.. up in smoke.
