If We Can View Investing Like Shopping!

Markets continued to slide the last week, with many hitting fresh lows. This kind of market makes many investors run for cover, moving into either more defensive equities or safer bonds. However, I think a shift in mentality is required during such times. Consider that when we are shopping to buy something that we want, we are constantly looking for bargains. Thus, we love sales, and the bigger the discount which something is selling for, the more we love it.

Consider the recent announcement of the Kindle Fire, by Amazon, and selling at 199 USD which is less than half the price of an iPad. And from all accounts, it appears that this has sparked a frenzy of pre-orders for the Kindle Fire. This goes for clothes, bags, and anything which consumers might be interested in. The bigger the price discount, the happier we are buying it.

Now, if we apply this analogy to equities, it should be the same principle, but emotionally, the reaction is very different. More often than not, when markets are in free fall, everyone is afraid to buy in. This is despite the stocks held by many equity funds tend to be very high quality stocks, with regular earnings streams, and are well positioned to ride out the current volatility.

The current situation is painful for investors who have already bought in previously. However, this is temporary. As with all markets cycles, this one will change eventually as confidence returns. And it is often the best bargains which were available for investors to pick up during such times. Think back to other great market crisis which have happened in the past few decades, including the global oil shock in the seventies, the bursting of the tech bubble in late 1999, the Asian financial crisis, and the more recent Lehman Brother’s crisis. Through it all, markets have always recovered. Companies are not one to stand by idly while watching their profits shrink. They will cut costs, start new product lines, innovate. Solely because they are profit driven, they will not stand still. So, equity funds, which are holdings dozens of companies, are investing mainly into the earnings of these companies, and every company will strive to grow its earnings over time. Being able to buy into equity funds while the companies are trading at such cheap prices represents great value. And when bargain hunting, value is what we should be looking for.

I think u didn't read the Buffetology part properly..let me show u again

Most of the time, most businesses are not worth what they are selling for, but on rare occasions the wonderful businesses are almost given away. When that happens, buy boldly, paying no attention to current gloomy economic and stock market forecasts."

also when price was @ 18+..PE at that time was < 10x..value investors look for stocks that are out of favour with other investors especially those with low PE ratios..anything less than 10 would be a good indicator..who can predict that the market will start free falling? In any case if Warren Buffet had bought a stock and an investor bought cheaper than him, then by alls means that person got it at a better price than Buffet, but does it make him smarter? ..it's all about market timing, but one cannot catch the bottom bottom..that's what u are trying to do..if u know when's the bottom pls tell me.. as an investor i do my sums and use these figures to determine my investments, analyse whether the company is undervalued, if it is, i'll buy it,of course it may go lower,at least i know i'm getting it at a price lower than it's intrinsic value,at the end of the day, the price will catch up with its intrinsic value. i'm not a trader nor a speculator,i'm an investor. i don't buy a share n hope that it will go up tomorrow, i buy it because market sentiment has mispriced a stock and it's an opportunity to capitalize on this anomaly.

Let me leave u with some Buffetology...i still think u do not know what the meaning of investing..and taking advantage of opportunities where undervalued companies present itself........

Investment Style
Warren Buffett's investing style of discipline, patience and value has consistently outperformed the market for decades.

John Train, author of " The Money Masters" (1980), provides us with a succinct description of Buffett's investment approach: " The essence of Warren's thinking is that the business world is divided into a tiny number of wonderful businesses – well worth investing in at a price – and a large number of bad or mediocre businesses that are not attractive as long-term investments. Most of the time, most businesses are not worth what they are selling for, but on rare occasions the wonderful businesses are almost given away. When that happens, buy boldly, paying no attention to current gloomy economic and stock market forecasts."

Buffett's criteria for " wonderful businesses" include, among others, the following:
  • They have a good return on capital without a lot of debt.
  • They are understandable.
  • They see their profits in cash flow.
  • They have strong franchises and, therefore, freedom to price.
  • They don't take a genius to run.
  • Their earnings are predictable.
  • The management is owner-oriented.
" Rule No.1 is never lose money. Rule No.2 is never forget rule number one."

The speculative fever in Gold has been broken for the short to intermediate term, a healthy thing. This fever will come back into the Gold market soon and eventually rage out of control. Are you buying Gold now while prices are low or will you wait until prices are higher again and then kick yourself for not buying while there was a sale?

Gold gettin hit big time...along with many commodities..

all this is because of the big spike in the USD..

i see Gold in a correction, with the central banks printing more money as the only solution,

Gold and commodities will be heading much higher..

this correction presents an opportunity to collect more gold at lower prices..

DYODD..gd luck!!

you are assuming that me n Andy are different..

but i can show u the similarities..

We both made lots of $$$$ with United Envirotech..(the forummers who stuck with me will know this)

and we're both buying Viking at dirt cheap prices knowing full well that the company is PROFITABLE

and price will catch up with the real intrinsic value of the company.. :)

i'm averaging down like crazy cos when the share price drops, an INVESTOR will have more buying

power to scoop up more shares in the company..

i'm a long term investor.. i don't shiver in fear when the price of a PROFITABLE company drops..

i see it as an opportunity to collect more.. the business fundamentals do not change over night..

the price fluctuates day in and day out.. for an investor u need to know when to capitalize on that.

Gd luck :)
