Manufacturing firm Eastern Asia Technology, or Eastech, says its net profit for the second quarter jumped sevenfold from a year ago, to 2.5 million dollars.

The firm produces audio, video and information appliances in the electronic and commercial industry.

But its revenue for the three months to June dropped 29 percent to 97 million dollars.

The firm says it managed to improve its profit margin despite the fall in income, because of its utilisation of stock acquired at lower prices, a shift in product mix towards higher-margin products and lower material costs.

Eastech adds that it has been reaping benefits since the start of 2009 from a major restructuring exercise that it undertook to rein in costs and shed unprofitable lines.

The restructure, which resulted in a loss of 2.6 million dollars from discontinued operations in the second quarter of last year, ceased to have a financial impact this year.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, the firm says it expects to turn in healthy profits for the whole year.
