March 15 (Bloomberg) -- Tokyo Electric Power Co. engineers at a nuclear plant restored water to safe levels, helping drive down radiation after residents within 30 kilometers (19 miles) were ordered inside to avoid contamination. Water supply at reactors No. 1 and No. 3 stabilized and radiation readings at the front gate of the plant dropped to a level that isn’t “harmful to the human body,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said this afternoon in Tokyo. Separately, Tokyo Electric said it hadn’t decided whether to bring workers after the utility evacuated 750 of its 800 employees following this morning’s blast. Good news is flowing out, Nikkei again may turn North.... ![]()

15-03-2011--Regional bourses fell on  Japanese radiation fears triggering widespread  selling with Singapore falling more than 3% at one stage to its lowest level since last August and  finished off at < .FTSTI> 2,946.08 points, or -2.8%,  easing of a little of its early loss. * Singapore falls to 7-month low at one stage. Airline companies fell again because of worries about tourism and travel around the region, with some considering whether they should halt flights to and from Japan. On short term, tourist sector to suffer but petrochemicals and energy stocks should gain. " Petrochemicals will likely benefit as significant capacity is and will be shut down for repair and safety checks," anticipating shifts away from nuclear to other sources of energy, to the benefit of refineries and coal miners. Factors  to Watch: Japan braces for potential radiation catastrophe   |

G-8 in ugent meeting over Japan and Libya crises....? Officials placed Dai-ichi Unit 1, and four other reactors, under states of emergency Friday because operators had lost the ability to cool the reactors using usual procedures. Local evacuations were ordered. Officials began venting radioactive steam at Unit 1 to relieve pressure inside the reactor vessel, which houses the overheated uranium fuel. Concerns escalated dramatically Saturday when that unit's containment building exploded. It turned out that officials were aware that the steam contained hydrogen, acknowledged Shinji Kinjo, spokesman for the govt Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. More importantly, they also were aware they were risking an explosion by deciding to vent the steam. The significance of the hydrogen began to come clear late Saturday: Officials decided to reduce rising pressure inside the reactor vessel, so they vented some of the steam buildup. They needed to do that to prevent the entire structure from exploding, and thus starting down the road to a meltdown. At the same time, in order to keep the reactor fuel cool, and also prevent a meltdown, operators needed to keep circulating more and more cool water on the fuel rods. Temperature in the reactor vessel apparently kept rising, heating the zirconium cladding that makes up the fuel rod casings. Once the zirconium reached 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit (1,200 Celsius), it reacted with the water, becoming zirconium oxide and hydrogen. When the hydrogen-filled steam was vented from the reactor vessel, the hydrogen reacted with oxygen, either in the air or water outside the vessel, and exploded. A similar " hydrogen bubble" had concerned officials at the 1979 Three Mile Island nuclear disaster in Pennsylvania until it dissipated. If the temperature inside the Fukushima reactor vessel continued to rise even more — to roughly 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,200 Celsius) — then when the uranium fuel pellets would start to melt. According to experts interviewed by The Associated Press, any melted fuel would eat through the bottom of the reactor vessel. Next, it would eat through the floor of the already-damaged containment building. At that point, the uranium and dangerous byproducts would start escaping into the environment. At some point in the process, the walls of the reactor vessel — 6 inches (15 centimeters) of stainless steel — would melt into a lava-like pile, slump into any remaining water on the floor, and potentially cause an explosion much bigger than the one caused by the hydrogen. Such an explosion would enhance the spread of radioactive contaminants. If the reactor core became exposed to the external environment, officials would likely began pouring cement and sand over the entire facility, as was done at the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident in the Ukraine, Peter Bradford, a former commissioner of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said in a briefing for reporters. At that point, Bradford added, " many first responders would die if it is expose." http://sg.news.yahoo.com/japan-plant-frantic-efforts-avoid-meltdown-20110312-144803-031.html In Japan plant, frantic efforts to avoid meltdownInside the troubled nuclear power plant, officials knew the risks were high when they decided to vent radioactive steam from a severely overheated reactor vessel. They knew a hydrogen explosion could occur, and it did. The decision still trumped the worst-case alternative — total nuclear meltdown. (teeth53 thot--A lesson, especially for our govt to learn, are we going to built a nuclear plant here...?) The chain of events started Fri when a magnitude-8.9 earthquake and tsunami severed electricity to the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex 170 miles (270 kilometers) northeast of here, crippling its cooling system. Then, backup power did not kick in properly at one of its units. From there, conditions steadily worsened, although govt and nuclear officials initially said things, improving..?. Hours after the explosion, they contended that radiation leaks were reduced and that circumstances had gotten better at the 460-megawatt Unit 1. But crisis after crisis continued to develop or to  be revealed. Without power, and without plant pipes and pumps that were destroyed in the explosion of the most-troubled reactor's containment building, authorities resorted to drawing seawater in an attempt to cool off the overheated uranium fuel rods. (Arab league secretary-general) Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- The Arab League voted Sat to back a no-fly zone in Libya and is asking that the U.N. Security Council impose the measure, officials of the regional body told reporters. Youssef bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Oman's foreign minister who joined Moussa to answer questions, said the no-fly zone would be a preventive measure and would have to be stopped immediately when the Libyan crisis ends. No-fly zone carries challenges
" It has one goal: To protect the civilian population. We will inform U.N. of our request to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya. " The U.N. Security Council should decide how it will be enforced." Amre Moussa, secretary-general said. (Arab League). He said Arab League members have reservations about military intervention, but said all countries agreed that a no-fly zone must be imposed urgently to protect civilians. " We hope the Libyan authorities will respect a no-fly decision," he said. " Be assured the Arab countries will not accept the intervention of the NATO coalition." Latest news on Japan (Reuters) - Radiation leaked from a damaged Japanese nuclear reactor north of Tokyo on Saturday, the govt said, after an explosion blew the roof off the facility in the wake of a massive earthquake.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said, an evacuation radius of 10 km (6 miles) from the stricken 40-year-old Daiichi 1 reactor plant in Fukushima prefecture was adequate, but an hour later the boundary was extended to 20 km (13 miles). TV footage showed vapour rising from the plant, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo.
The developments raised fears of a meltdown at the core  (plant) as officials scrambled to contain what could be the worst nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl explosion in 1986 that shocked the world.

1012 GMT: The evacuation radius at the damaged nuclear plant in northeastern Japan has been widened to 20 km (12 miles), the public broadcaster NHK is reporting.
teeth53 thot--Developing one here even with a light water type, like Japan and if anythings happen, 20 km lehh..?.

When reactors shut down, cooling systems must kick in to bring down the very high temperatures. This is key to prevent a " nuclear meltdown" and radioactive release. Japan's network of advanced nuclear power plants are designed to shut down as soon as the earth shakes, than again.
When Friday's quake hit, the plants immediately shut down, along with others in quake-hit parts of Japan, as they are designed to do - but cooling systems at some reactors failed, the government said.
One can never tell, if we hav one that fail here. S'pore Int'l business  can shut down n all  can go for holiday liao.

The good news. No nuclear reactor explosion. a nuclear explosion will cause a big mushroom
A  light water reactor is unlike a Russian type " No Chernobyl is possible at, Naoto Sekimura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, said.
" Even in the worst-case scenario, that would mean some radioactive leakage and equipment damage, but not an explosion. If venting is done carefully, there will be little leakage. Certainly not beyond the 3 km radius."

Footage on Japanese TV showed that the walls of one building had crumbled, leaving only a skeletal metal frame block standing. Puffs of smoke were spewing out of the plant. It was not clear what the building housed.
Pressure has been building up in the reactor - it's now twice the normal level - and Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency told reporters Saturday that the plant was venting " radioactive vapors." Officials said they were measuring radiation levels in the area.
The reactor in trouble has already leaked some radiation: Operators have detected eight times the normal radiation levels outside the facility and 1,000 times normal inside Unit 1's control room.
Ryohei Shiomi, an official with Japan's nuclear safety commission, said that even if there was a meltdown, it wouldn't affect people outside a six-mile (10-kilometer) radius - an assertion that might need revising if the situation deteriorates. Most of the 51,000 residents living within the danger area had been evacuated, he said.

Local Japanese media reporting explosion, ceiling collapse at earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear plant injuries reported
The day Japan was hit by 8.9 magnitude...earthquake (Friday),
(Thurs) it China -- Yunnan  province was hit by another 5.4...earthquake, followed by more than 1,200 minor tremors that hit the regional in the past two months, which is very  near to Myanmar border. Myanmar Meteorological Dept released a statement saying, a quake had hit some 370km North-East of Mandalay.
Worst off  is it epicentre was in Shiming village, just 2km away,  which triggered a power outage across  Yingjiang which had having a population of 300,000 pple's.
Note--Massive earthquake rocked China South-Western chinese province of Sichuan in May 2008, leaving 87,000 pple's dead or missing.

A lesson we all and especially our govt n S.E.A  must learn on what can  nuclear fallout mean...
If really nuclear plant fallout, can kiss goodbye or death  to any nuclear plants in SEA.
If I'm not mistaken SG govt announced that they would be building one here (Jurong..?.). Scary.

and is there  one oso in Myanmar...not confirm ??, or am I  just imagining things..?

Original post:  News flash from Kyodo Wire: There are reports that the Japanese PM will declare a nuclear emergency.
The operator of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant reported an abnormality Friday following a powerful earthquake which hit a wide area in northeastern Japan including Fukushima Prefecture, the industry ministry said.
The system to cool reactor cores in case of emergency stopped at the No. 1 and No. 2 reactors of the plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co., it said.
Update: There's no evidence of any radioactive leakage, but officials have confirmed that the cooling process for the nuclear plant has not yet gone according to plan.
Update 2: Japan has declared a nuclear emergency.
Update 3: 2000 residents near the Fukushima Nuclear Plant have been urged to evacuate.
teeth53 thot--If we, here (S'pore) built one and or in near by M'sia or in Indonesia, we has no where to go or hide.
With Japan high stanadard of building such reactor, what more with a sub-standard one, N.Korea and China is cause for concern.
