Japan may aware of...* Japan radioactivity could enter food chain, children at risk

* Radioactive materials spewed into the air by Japan's earthquake-crippled nuclear plant may contaminate food and water resources.

S'pore--Radioactive materials spewed into the air by Japan's earthquake-crippled nuclear plant may contaminate food and water resources, with children and unborn babies most at risk of possibly developing cancer.
Any exposure to radioactive materials has the potential to cause various kinds of cancers, with higher levels of radiation seen as more dangerous.
" For some individuals even a small amount of radiation can raise the risk of cancer. The higher the radiation, the higher the risk of cancer," said Lam, who is also a member on the American Board of Toxicologists.
" The explosions could expose the population to longer-term radiation, which can raise the risk of cancer. These are thyroid cancer, bone cancer and leukemia. Children and fetuses are especially vulnerable," said Lam Ching-wan, chemical pathologist at the University of Hong Kong.
Radioactive material is carried by minute moisture droplets in the air, then can  be directly inhaled into the lungs, get washed down by rain into the sea and onto soil, eventually contaminate crops, marine life and drinking water.
Cow milk was also especially vulnerable, experts said, if cows graze on grass exposed to radiation.
" No one is measuring the levels of radiation in the sea," Lee told Reuters.

" Steam that is released into the air will eventually get back into the water and sea life will be affected ... once there is rain, drinking water will also be contaminated."
Children at risk
Radiation is dangerous because it can cause changes or mutations in DNA, which may then go on to cause cancer. While the human body can repair DNA changes or damage, a person is only safe if the repair process happens faster than the time it takes for the damaged or mutated DNA material to replicate.

Most experts agree that growing children and fetuses are most at risk b'cos their cells divide at a faster rate than adults.

They (babies and childrens) also consume more cow milk than adults, putting them at further risk, said a Japanese scientist who treated victims of the atom bomb explosion in Hiroshima.
" Cows are like vacuum cleaners, picking up radioactive iodine that lands over a wide area of pasture, and then those particles very easily are concentrated and pass into the milk," said the expert, who declined to be identified.

" This was what happened in Chernobyl, and unfortunately, info risk had not been supplied to parents."

In the wake of Japan Quake and nuclear crisis...Asean must wake up to apocalyptic gamble.

Why we, we need to secure unclear free Asean.

teeth53 thot--Current horrors unfolding in Japan, must serve as an eye-opening to the horrors of any eventuality of Indonesia and or Asean apocallytic gamble if ever took place on un-secure ground.

A unified voice by Asean must be collective heard to discourage future gambles with innocent deformative lives and live that work inside nuclear plant. (refering to Fukushima 50 workers loyalty) be it living creatures that living in Asean ground and or under the sea.

A single typical mid-sized nuclear power plant--M'sia's nuclear energy plans are starting to look more concrete, now that we have dollar figure (US$3.1 billion--1000MW), and a tentative date (" post 2020" ). said Mohamad Zam Zam Jaafar " Malaysia going nuclear post-2020 was looking more and more like a necessity,

Meanwhile, consumer countries like Singapore don't seem to have much plans beyond building LNG terminals, an interim stop-gas measure if there was any.

A nuclear-powered Malaysia would have access to cheap, reliable energy and they would steal a march on their supposedly more high-tech sophisticated southerly neighbour, if M'sia were to go nuclear, so should Singapore.

Libya rebels battle to hold eastern city under heavy siege from Moammar Gadhafi's forces

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/libyan-forces-bombard-rebels-east-west-gadhafi-moves-20110316-021240-472.html

Charred vehicles, bullet-riddled pickup trucks and an overturned tank littered the desert highway where pro-Gadhafi forces had fought up to the entrance of the key eastern city of Ajdabiya.

if Gadhafi troops take it, Benghazi would likely be their next target. A powerful regime force advancing from the west has been relentlessly bombarding Ajdabiya the past two days, raining rockets and artillery and tank shells on the city, sending most of its population fleeing.

Already under siege using mercenaries in more than 400 vehicles that are already en route, and one against mountain villages in the west where tanks, heavy artillery and other weapons are being gathered for an assault.

Evidence of fierce battles. Government troops were bringing in a stream of truckloads of ammunition, rockets and supplies — signs of an intensified effort by the Libyan leader to retake control of the country he has ruled with an iron fist for more than four decades.

Hundreds of pro-Gadhafi troops were lined up with dozens of tanks and other heavy equipment at the arches over the highway marking Ajdabiya's western gates. The AP and other journalists brought to the scene by government escorts saw regime forces bringing in large truckloads of ammunition and equipment — a sign that that the troops were gearing up to try to sweep through Ajdabiya and likely beyond.

Meanwhile....

Opposition officials said rebel warplanes struck at pro-Gadhafi forces near the western gate — the first time the rebels have struck from the air at troops on the ground. A gas station attendant on the highway said he saw a rebel helicopter firing rockets and machine-guns. A colonel in the pro-Gadhafi force, Moftah Sabia, said the rebels did have some aircraft that they had used against the troops.

The rebels claimed a small victory, hijacking a Libyan tanker ship that was transporting fuel from Greece to Gadhafi's regime. Opposition spokesman Mustafa Gheriani said fighters seized the ship on Tuesday off the Mediterranean coast and that it was carrying about 25,000 tons of fuel for Gadhafi.

The tanker, Anwaar Afriqya, was seen Wednesday docked in the port at Tobruk, a rebel-held city in the far eastern side of Libya.

Latest news.....

The US, in a reversal, was pushing for broader action to protect civilians. According to a council diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity, council discussions were private, U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said during more than eight hours of closed-door negotiations by council ambassadors.

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- The Arab League voted Sat to back a no-fly zone in Libya and is asking that the U.N. Security Council impose the measure, officials of the regional body told reporters.

" It has one goal: To protect the civilian population. We will inform U.N. of our request to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya. " The U.N. Security Council should decide how it will be enforced." Amre Moussa, secretary-general said. (Arab League). He said Arab League members have reservations about military intervention, but said all countries agreed that a no-fly zone must be imposed urgently to protect civilians.

" We hope the Libyan authorities will respect a no-fly decision," he said. " Be assured the Arab countries will not accept the intervention of the NATO coalition."

Arab league also voted to open channels of communication with Transitional National Council, opposition's newly formed administration, and that any talks with that body would be on a humanitarian basis.

Fighting in Ras Lanuf, a key oil hub in eastern Libya now the frontline in a bloody uprising against Kadhafi, flared again Friday after a fierce battle the day before, rebels said.

Britain and France have a draft resolution in hand to put to the UN Security Council for an air exclusion zone over the oil-rich country. But the council remains split on the issue and

At two-day NATO defence ministers' talks that began Thursday, the alliance agreed to send more ships towards Libya's coast but it delayed any decision on imposing a no-fly zone, saying clear UN approval for military action was needed first.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said ahead of the EU summit that France and Britain favour targeted strikes in Libya if Kadhafi uses chemical weapons or air strikes against his people. But he and Britain Premier David Cameron were " ready on condition that the UN wishes, so d  Arab League accepts and the Libyan opposition agrees, for targeted actions if uses chemical weapons or air strikes against peaceful citizens," meanwhile...

The US announces it will soon send civilian humanitarian aid teams into opposition-held eastern Libya, but stresses the step should not be seen as a military intervention.

Libyan rebels appealed for arms as they Friday sent fighters into battle against Moamer Kadhafi's advancing forces, as France and Britain urged targeted strikes in the oil-rich country.

Sarkozy said Paris had " many reservations" on military or NATO intervention in Libya " because Arab revolutions belong to Arabs."

SINGAPORE - Radioactive materials spewed into the air by Japan's earthquake-crippled nuclear plant may contaminate food and water resources, with children and unborn babies most at risk of possibly developing cancer.
Experts said any exposure to radioactive materials has the potential to cause various kinds of cancers, with higher levels of radiation seen as more dangerous.

Cow milk was also especially vulnerable, experts said, if cows graze on grass exposed to radiation.
Lee Tin-lap, toxicologist and associate professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong's School of Medical Sciences, said waters around Japan must be measured for radioactivity.

" No one is measuring the levels of radiation in the sea," Lee told Reuters.

" Steam that is released into the air will eventually get back into the water and sea life will be affected ... once there is rain, drinking water will also be contaminated."

Radiation is dangerous because it can cause changes or mutations in DNA, which may then go on to cause cancer. Nuclear accident can happen at anytime and when it strike, it mean our children, their childrens and their, their childrens will hav and has to jump into d sea.

Cause simple...radioactive leakage can spread very fast and many places outside, now Japan extended to  a radius of 60 km from the epic centre.

Body and pple's, their childrens will, will be born without legs, hands and in deform stage.

Chernobyl 25 Years Later Turns Into Lesson for Japan on Nuclear Meltdown

A reader which said in YAHOO.COM--Pray that the people there are not excessively exposed to the radiation.

Can you imagine our govt throwing up idea of a nuclear facility in S'pore a while ago. even a 1st world country like Japan with the best advanced technolo----, preventive plan and system is facing a catastrophe. who is to say that it may not happen here. A 20km evacuation radius in means every one need to be evacuated, where to???

we must not allow a nuclear power facility to be build here at all. For the sake of our children and their children, children. I hope our decision makers are a little wiser know.

teeth53--Not hope. We must be wise,  must not be  thoughtless,  till is  thought  us a lesson  than is too late.
