05-04-2011 19:16:26--Regional  Asia Stocks - Most pull back on profit-taking

* SGX rose 0.32c  or +4.0%  to $8.33  on volume of  15,473,000 million share changed hands, on news that... Federal Treasurer opposes merger with SGX    and on Australia to reject S'pore Exchange's $7.8 billion ASX bid

* Resource, financials lead regional losses

April 5 (Reuters) - Most  regional Asian stock mkts eased on Tues as investors cashed in recent gains in
resource and financials, with weak palm oil prices helping put a lid on palm plantation stocks.

GAR lost 0.015 or 2.1%  to 0.70, IndoAgri lost 0.060 or 2.6%  to $2.28, while Wilmar lost 0.050 or 0.9% to $5.38

The region's favorable economic outlook, which have lured fund inflows to beneficiary sectors like banks and energy, still boded well for mkt uptrends, according to dealers in the region. " Momentum still looks positive in our view. Good economic outlook and earnings of key sectors are supporting stories and this is a regional trend,"

Asian shares were generally flat on Tues, with MSCI's broadest measure of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan
up 0.04% by 0919 GMT. A brief dip in oil prices on Tues triggered profit taking in energy and resource-related, although oil prices still stayed with sight of their highest levels since 2008, supported by unrest in the world's top oil exporting  nations and delays to elections in Nigeria.

" Key takeaway from better-than-expected headline inflation is that its monthly upward trajectory won't be linear," said broker Citi Investment Research and Analysis.

" This doesn't change the fact that inflationary expectations have drifted up in the face of persistent fuel price adjustments, which are likely to lead to broadening CPI pressures that underpin a higher inflation outlook,"

Latest news update Libya live blog...

http://blogs.aljazeera.net/live/africa/libya-live-blog-april-4

Don't " shut the door" on arming the rebels, says former US President Bill Clinton. In remarks to ABC News, Clinton said he'd need to know more - presumably about the rebel makeup - before arming them, but wouldn't eliminate the possibility.

Italy appears to have become the 3rd country to effectively recognise the opposition Transitional National Council (TNC) as the legitimate representative of the Libyan people.

Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said the council was the only legitimate interlocutor and dismissed a message delivered by a Gaddafi envoy, Abdel Ati al-Obeidi, seeking to negotiate an end to the conflict.

" Tripoli's regime has no future," Frattini said.

News update...meanwhile...Gaddafi  and  family  is bend on seeking bloody revenge.

(Revenge is a harmful action against a person or group in response to a grievance, be it real or perceived)

Brega Athens (Reuters) - A Libyan envoy was in Europe on Monday seeking to end the oil-producing country's bloody civil war that has become locked in a battlefield stalemate  …  More  »

Beyond a willingness to talk, there was no sign of what Libya might offer to end the war that is bogged down on a frontline around the eastern oil town of Brega, while civilians are bombarded by Gaddafi forces.

Misrata, a Turkish ship that sailed into the besieged city to rescue some 250 wounded under protection of Turkish warplanes had to leave in a hurry after thousands pressed forward on the dock. It is expected to reach Cesme in Turkey on Tuesday night.

Another aid ship operated by charity Medecins Sans Frontieres docked in the Tunisian port of Sfax carrying 71 wounded people from Misrata, many with bullet wounds and broken limbs and one whose face was completely disfigured by burns.

Wounded refugees from the town said a massacre was taking place, with one describing the situation as " hell" .

" Imagine, Gaddafi use tanks  killing civilians and  is prepared to kill everyone there. I am thinking of my family."

" I could live or die but I am thinking of my family and friends who are stranded in the hell of Misrata," said a tearful Abdullah Lacheeb, who had serious injuries to his pelvis and stomach and a bullet wound in his leg.

" CORPSES IN THE STREET"

Omar Boubaker, a 40-year-old engineer with a bullet wound to the leg, said: " You have to visit Misrata to see the massacre by Gaddafi ... Corpses in the street. The hospital over-flowing."

Misrata, Libya's third city, rose up with other towns against Gaddafi's rule in mid-February, but it is now surrounded by  Pro-Gaddafi troops.  Govt officials deny attacking civilians in Misrata, saying that they are fighting armed gangs linked to al Qaeda.

Al Jazeera television said on Monday that Gaddafi forces had bombarded Misla oil field in eastern Libya.

Misla, operated by the eastern-based Arabian Gulf Oil Company (Agoco) which is under rebel control, lies in the desert 400 km (250 miles) south of the rebel-held town of Ajdabiyah.

Stalemate on the frontline, high-level defections from Gaddafi's inner circle and the plight of civilians caught in fighting or facing food and fuel shortages have prompted a flurry of diplomatic contacts to find a way out.

One diplomat cautioned, however, that any diplomatic compromise -- for example one in which Gaddafi handed over power to one of his sons -- could lead to the partition of Libya.

" Various scenarios are being discussed," said the diplomat. " Everyone wants a quick solution."

The U.N.-mandated military intervention, in which warplanes have attacked Gaddafi's armour, radars and air defences, began on March 19

Neither the Gaddafi troops nor the mostly disorganised rebel force have been able to gain the upper hand on the frontline, despite the Western air power in effect aiding the insurgents.

Getting organized--discipline and co-ordination improving for  pro-democracy fighters to gain some momentum.

http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2011/03/2011331142051984358.html

Al Jazeera's Sue Turton, reporting from the frontlines of the battle to reclaim Brega from pro-Gaddafi forces, said that overnight NATO air strikes allowed the " They sent spotters out on the flanks before moving a unit forward," Turton said. " It worked for a while before the more excitable rushed forward."

She said, Gaddafi's forces reacted swiftly. " Mortars obliterated one car and damaged two others. These rookie soldiers are learning the hard way," Turton reported.

Pro-democracy fighters and forces loyal to Gaddafi have been fighting across a strip of land between Ajdabiya and the town of Bin Jawad for weeks.

Ee-Libyan foreign minister Moussa Koussa, has defected to UK.  While Libyan govt spokeman  on Thurs said  that " other people will step in and do  his job" .

Misurata – the last major rebel stronghold in western Libya – has been encircled by pro-Gaddafi forces for weeks and repeated coalition air strikes aimed at protecting civilians there have not stopped them.

Gaddafi's former justice minister. Mustafa Abdul Jalil who is currently heading the transitional council out of eastern Libya, on Friday demanded the siege on  western Libyan cities, including Misurata,  to be lifted.

Ceasefire offer was put forth by  Abdelilah  Al-Khatib, (UN envoy to Libya) is visiting the rebels' de-facto stronghold--Benghazi in hopes of reaching a ceasefire and political  solution to the crisis embroiling the Libya.

April 1 (Reuters) Regional stocks, banks, Marine & Offshore and  resources shares lead regional gains

* Inflows push most indexes to new highs today

The market pulled back for rest of the first quarter as funds shifted to laggard stocks in developed markets.
But the tables have since turned  on Asian market,   Thailand  saw $275 million inflows in Friday's session, the biggest since April 2006.

" We're seeing a build-up of foreign buy orders in  regional stocks after the underperformance in the first quarter. Flows should still hold within this region ahead of dividend pays in coming months,"

Asian shares outside Japan rose to their highest in nearly three years on Friday, looking to extend a three-quarter winning streak. The yen slid on the widespread view that Japanese interest rates would stay near zero for a long time to help the quake-ravaged economy.

MSCI's index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan < .MIAPJ0000PUS> hit its highest level since May 2008 on optimism about global economic growth. It was up 0.86 percent at 0948 GMT.

Singapore hovered at seven-week highs. Malaysia < .KLSE> , Indonesia < .JKSE> and the Philippines < .PSI> each was around multi-month highs.

In Singapore, higher oil prices are expected to continue benefiting oil rig makers, with Keppel Corp rising 0.8
percent, and other offshore marine firms such as STX OSV, surging 5 percent.

March 31 (Reuters) - Growing appetite for risk and optimism over earnings lifted most Southeast Asian stk mkts on Thurs, the region ended the quarter mostly in the red due to a soft start to the year.

Asian stocks advanced on Thurs, heading for a quarterly gain despite a sharp sell-off earlier this mth after disaster struck Japan, while the yen was poised for a quarterly loss on expectations Tokyo will have to maintain super-loose monetary policy far longer than EU and the U.S.

Among bright spots, OCBC rose 1.3% to 6-wk highs, SingTel rose 1.0% to $3.02, while  HPH Trust  in US$  rose  0.005 cent, on heavy volume of 459,055,000 million of share changed hands, and  Serial System jumped as much as 10% on expectations may receive more orders, on  disruptions of some of its competitors in the aftermath of the Japan earthquake. SE Asia Stocks-Earnings optimism lifts stocks financials lead

* Regional bourses scale multi-week highs
* Thai bourse see biggest inflows in three years

March 30 -  Regional Asian stock mkts rose in active sessions on Wed as investors picked up shares in companies expected to report good quarterly results, with banks leading the way on strong loan growth.

Investors appeared more confident  on  outlook, on corporate earnings in  d  2nd Q, outweighing lingering concerns of risks from the unrest in the Middle East and the effects an earthquake and nuclear crisis in Japan.

Growing appetite towards the end of the  1st Q  comes ahead of a raft of corporate dividend payments and releases of  1st Q  results, which are poised to lure more buying interests in the coming quarter.

" There's a chance that regional indexes could trade at new peaks in the next quarter. The  1st Q  results of Asian firms...is a positive story," said Viwat Techapoonphol, a Bangkok-based strategist at broker Tisco Securities.

Regional bourses climbed to fresh multi-week highs on Wed, in part due to hopes for a positive spillover from Japanese spending on reconstruction.

Asian stocks rallied on Wed as investors snapped up riskier assets on attractive valuations, while Japanese exporters were helped by the yen's weakness on expectation of interest rate rises in EU and the U.S.

Thing to note--Investors in the region were also watchful for inflation data for April, due on Friday, a further indication of the region's tightening policy. Inflation is expected to gather momentum for the remainder of
this year on potential state cuts in subsidies just as uncertainty in the Middle East raises risks of higher oil prices,

A single typical mid-sized nuclear power plant--M'sia's nuclear energy plans are starting to look more concrete, now that we have dollar figure (US$3.1 billion--1000MW), and a tentative date (" post 2020" ). said Mohamad Zam Zam Jaafar " Malaysia going nuclear post-2020 was looking more and more like a necessity,

it will be almost just in time for Malaysia's crude oil and gas production to peak. Yet another example that affirms my theory that producer countries with declining fossil fuel production.

Meanwhile, consumer countries like Singapore don't seem to have much plans beyond building LNG terminals, an interim stop-gas measure if there was any.

A nuclear-powered Malaysia would have access to cheap, reliable energy and they would steal a march on their supposedly more high-tech sophisticated southerly neighbour, if M'sia were to go nuclear, so should Singapore.

Group of 20 chairman Sarkozy said France wanted to host a meeting of the bloc's nuclear officials in May to fix new norms in the wake of the crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant.

" We must address this anomaly that there are no international safety norms for nuclear matters," he said.

The world's worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl in 1986 is proving harder to contain and has forced an international rethink on the benefits and safety of nuclear power.

UN nuclear watchdog has suggested Japan consider widening an evacuation zone around a tsunami-damaged nuclear plant as radiation continues to leak into seawater near the plant.

Thurs--International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), radiation expert measured at the village of Iitate, 40km from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, exceeded a criterion for evacuation. U.N. (IAEA) sets standards and recommendations, and are not legally binding and safety is primarily the responsibility of member states.

Radioactivity in the seawater has reached more than 4,000 times its legal limit, the Reuters news agency reported.

" We have advised (Japan) to carefully assess the situation and they have indicated that it is already under assessment," Denis Flory, the IAEA's deputy director general, said.

Concerns over radiation spreading beyond Japan grew again  when S'pore detected radiation nine times the limit in cabbages imported from Japan while the United States reported small levels of radiation in milk samples on its west coast.

Japan has ordered those within a 20km radius from the plant to leave and is encouraging those living in a 20-30km ring to do the same, and if they do not, to stay inside.

Contaminated victims

Thurs--Kyodo news, radiation fears have prevented authorities from collecting as many as 1,000 bodies of victims of the earthquake and tsunami from within the 20-kilometre-radius evacuation zone, The authorities are now considering how to collect the bodies, given fears that police officers, doctors and bereaved families may be exposed to radiation in retrieving the radiation-exposed bodies or at morgues.
