http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-24/threat-to-japanese-food-chain-multiplies-as-cesium-contamination-spreads.html

Radiation fallout from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant poses a growing threat to Japan’s food chain as unsafe levels of cesium found in beef on supermarket shelves were also detected in more vegetables and in the ocean.

Seafood Concerns

“Some areas still have high radiation dosages and if you also eat products from these areas, you’ll get a considerable amount of radiation,” said Sentaro Takahashi, a professor of radiation control at Kyoto University in western Japan. “This is why the government needs to do something fast.”

Radiation in food is measured in becquerel, a gauge of the strength of radioactivity in materials such as Iodine-131 and Cesium-137.

Meanwhile Ah Ben is thinking of this...Could the Fed Rescue US From the Debt Ceiling?

http://www.cnbc.com/id/43879039

The Fed currently owns about $1.63 trillion of Treasurys. It can sell these through its open market operations [cnbc explains] . All Fed income that exceeds the Fed’s costs are remitted to the U.S. Treasury Department. Which means that the revenues from selling Treasurys could be used to fund government operations instead of borrowing.

Sales of Treasurys by the Fed would not violate the debt ceiling laws, because the debt has already been issued. It is already counted against the debt ceiling.

The U.S. government borrows around $125 billion each month. This means that, at least in theory, it is possible for the Fed to fully fund the borrowing needs of the U.S. government for nearly a year.

Succes will come, not till both got no more money to spend....hummm.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-07-25/republicans-push-dueling-plans-with-democrats-for-raising-u-s-debt-limit.html

Republicans one plan, Democratsanother plan. Both  Trade Accusations Over Debt Talks.

The Obama administration and House Speaker John Boehner’s office exchanged charges of intransigence in talks aimed at averting a U.S. default Aug. 2 and tackling the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt.

Boehner’s office said he will unveil a plan today to prevent a default, cut spending and deny President Barack Obama a “blank check” to borrow more money without further reductions. Boehner told fellow Republicans he was determined to force action on a two-step debt-limit extension that would provide a $1 trillion, shorter-term increase than Obama seeks, defying a veto threat and the administration’s warnings of dire economic consequences.

America's in Debt Crisis.  Debt ceiling delay: " It would be a Gun shot self-inflicted wound"

Now -- Debt ceiling countdown.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- It's very hard to see how this ends well.

On Friday, for the third time in a month, Republicans abandoned negotiations with the White House over how to reduce the country's medium and long-term debt in time to raise the nation's debt ceiling.

On Saturday, Boehner told House Republicans in a conference call that he wanted to announce a solution to the impasse by Sunday afternoon before markets open in Asia, a GOP aide familiar with the call told CNN.

It remains to be seen how investors, who have so far mostly watched but not acted on the debt ceiling debate, respond to the latest breakdown.

teeth53 thot: The price to pay for is d one  who will run for top job of running the most powerful economy of a debt riddle country. Isit democrat, Mr Obama or the hopeful congress..?.

there's a QE 2.5 worth US$300 billion for now. Temporary can last for  2.5 months, same goes for Greece.

Then followup with a QE2.51, then 2.52 and so on.........and on.

Why? It's basic math:

The United States doesn't bring in enough revenue to pay all its bills -- with monthly deficits averaging $125 billion.

Beware the debt ceiling vote

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The debt ceiling talks, for weeks now, have been going on behind closed doors. The negotiations have been conducted by a tiny group of legislative leaders and President Obama's top aides.

All the while, the countdown to Aug. 2, when the government will no longer be able to pay all its bills, has marched closer.

Any proposal will still have to be put into legislative language, scored by the Congressional Budget Office and vetted by rank-and-file lawmakers whose votes will decide its fate.

Even after the principal negotiators announce a deal, the rest of Congress will have to be convinced to go along.

The closer to D-Day Washington gets, the messier it will be.

Agree. Staying alert and in tune rather then ignoring can assist us in making a better decision..

The cost of two (2) weeks delay will cost U.S. tax payers about US$150 billion in short fall.

Aug 03 - some  US$23 billion in social securities benefit payments are due.

Aug 04 - Treasury dept must pay US$87 billion to investors to redeem maturing treasury securities.

Aug 15 - more then US$30 billion interest payments are due., and

in additional to those costs, d govt normally pays US$10 billion daily to contractors, medicare providers, federal employees (public employees) and others.

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/photos/public-debt-worlds-richest-countries-photo-115443410.html

The US govt reached its debt limit of $14.29 trillion in May, and since then the Treasury Dept has used special measures to allow the govt to keep paying its bills.

Unless the limit is raised by August 2, the Treasury says, growing spending and debt service commitments will force a default, which would have disastrous ripple effects throughout the global financial system.

teeth53 thot: a two weeks delay is enuff to cause alot of headache, together with EU-PIIGs
