Debt ceiling: It's not over until the vote

Leaders of both parties had agreed that any deal to raise the debt ceiling should include long-term spending reductions to help control spiraling deficits. But they differed on both the timetable and requirements tied to certain cuts.

The agreement includes upfront spending cuts in the range of roughly $1 trillion. A special congressional committee would recommend additional spending reductions no later than Thanksgiving.

If Congress fails to approve the recommended cuts, automatic, across-the-board cuts -- including both defense and Medicare -- would take effect.

Is there rule to allow for break ? any backup?. (lunch, Tea break/coffee break, errr...toilet break)

Reid pushed forward by 12 hours a planned test vote today on his pending measure to raise the $14.3 debt ceiling and cut government spending. The planned 1 a.m. vote was rescheduled for 1 p.m. at the Capitol.

Earlier Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority leader, said he was “more optimistic” and that negotiators have “got a chance of getting there.”

(Reuters) - Negotiations on a deal to raise the debt limit still had a way to go, Senate (Republican) Majority Leader Harry Reid said, postponing until later on Sunday a test vote on a Democratic deficit reduction bill.

Getting that deal in place before Asian markets open by about 5 p.m. EDT Sunday would provide nervous investors some reassurance. But the timeframe looked very tight.

Deadline is reaching and no improvement in compromise yet. Tomorrow may have a minor bloodbath first while waiting for the final deadline to reach. If no deal, all hell breaks loose, just nice for the seventh month's celebration.

Japan is winding down it unclear power plant...Nuclear power station causing cancer -- An official study - German govt shows the risk of getting cancer is increasing for children growing up in the neighborhood of a nuclear power station.

This is in particular true for leukemia, a special case of cancer. The closer to the nuclear power station, the higher the risk of leukemia and cancer.

In Germany, child cancer patience are being recorded. For investigate into the cases of children's cancer between the years 1980 and 2003. There were 1592 children of age less than five years who got the disease and 4735 healthy children involved in the study.

The result showed - A significantly higher risk to get cancer if the children lived within a circle of less than 5 km around a nuclear power plant:

According to the normal statistical values, there should have been 48 cases of cancer and 17 cases of leukemia within the above mentioned circle of 5 km around the atomic power plants. Test others wise indicated, 77 cases of cancer (60% more than expected) and 37 cases of leukemia (117% more than expected).

A person directly involved in the study mentioned to Spiegel online, that there might be human at higher risk for leukemia even within a circle of 50 km around nuclear power plants.

The overspending cannot continue forever and the party has to end, sooner or later. It will be better to accept reality now and get on with the painful correction. The more we delay the inevitable, the more hallucinated the world becomes, and the problem will grow out of proportion until it culminates in a far greater catastrophe one day.

Moral of the story is to spend within your means.

Ah Ben - standby QE 2.5 worth US$300 billions. then plan B may kick in again QE 2.51, QE 2.52 and so on...

Print more money as Ah Ben is seen as neutral...credit rating kena knock down a knot. US$ weaker...

The Fed currently owns about $1.63 trillion of Treasurys. It can sell these through its open market operations . All Fed income that exceeds the Fed’s costs are remitted to the U.S. Treasury Department. Which means that the revenues from selling Treasurys could be used to fund government operations instead of borrowing.

Sales of Treasurys by the Fed would not violate the debt ceiling laws, because the debt has already been issued. It is already counted against the debt ceiling.

The U.S. government borrows around $125 billion each month. This means that, at least in theory, it is possible for the Fed to fully fund the borrowing needs of the U.S. government for nearly a year.

House Republicans delayed a scheduled vote on a bill to reduce the deficit and lift the debt ceiling on Thursday night. The Treasury Department says the $14.3 trillion debt limit must be raised before Aug. 2 or the government will run out of money to pay bills.
